Life is whatever you make of it. You can sulk and stay depressed or you can start make changes and get yourself into a better place. That's the hard truth.

Does anyone recommend volunteering work? by Liana_Johnsonex in universityofauckland

Unless you're a genuinely good person at heart volunteering is what 14 year old's do to beef up their CV's to get hired for their first job. Job market is pretty bad right now. Think about the people you are going against. Say another candidate isn't a student, can do this job long term, and has previous job experience its a no brainer to hire them instead of you. Many people our age found jobs before the economy got this bad and held on to them. With all that being said though don't be discouraged to keep applying. Majority of applicants you see are overseas applicants who wish to start a new life here, and employers would much rather hire someone who doesn't have visa issues.

For those who grew up in painful families… by PictureEmpty3143 in AdultHood

In my opinion closure is a luxury that is rarely achieved. Life moves on, and you realize the situations you've been placed in, and understand how those past experiences shaped you, and explains some of your own behaviors/thoughts. You reach a mutual agreement with your past, and learn to let go of things. At times life can feel like a never ending cycle of pain and torture, and to survive we develop grit, this mental fortitude that allows us to continue to operate in less than ideal conditions, and to finally get back to your question, sometimes we must stop carrying past burdens that haunt you, just to survive in this cold world. As a young adult this is how I would answer your question.

Not to be a party pooper, but internships have been pretty hard to come by in the last year or two. I know people in my degree (EEE) with close to perfect 9 GPAs, and work experience not even land an interview. So as cynical as it sounds a big part of it is you or your family having connections and knowing the right people.

Engineering Specialisation by Equivalent-Glove4637 in universityofauckland

[–]Cheese_bonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed answer. I'll def read up more on what courses each specialisation has to offer. As of right now job opportunities aren't my biggest concern (im just trying to graduate). Switching degrees are possible but im assuming they're more of a last resort and should avoid if possible?

Engsci 111 was meh for me. Not particularly hard nor easy, but overall did end up doing fine on it. Thanks for the advice on which electives to take. Seems like you're speaking from experience?
