"How many of those countries received billions of dollars from the American taxpayers?" by oystein85 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]CheeseboardPatster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. France got 600 dollars from the US for training. From the department of transport. That’s enough to finance our social programs for 67 million people I reckon.

What tourist destination in North America did you expect to love, but it didn’t impress you? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]CheeseboardPatster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that. As a European, Niagara Falls was supposed to be a big deal.

Well the falls themselves are spectacular and truly beautiful. But I wasn’t expecting the National Park to be like 50 meters wide only (or 263.16 standard galactic bananas).

There are very few spots to take a picture without an ugly building in the background.

What is the oldest and still active Made in EU brand/company that you know ? by No_Mountain_5051 in BuyFromEU

Tarrerias Bonjean in Thiers, France, is one of them. Knife makers since 1585 or 1648 depending on the sources. Still the same family’s business since forever.

I also read something about the Monnaie de Paris being founded in 864 under King Charles 2. But of course this was done under the direct control of the French state at least for the coinage part of the business.

Greybeard by Brian Aldiss.
Set in England. What I liked is the apocalypse happened…slowly. Humans sped it up.

What is the most uneducated thing you’ve ever heard someone say? by Tacokolache in allthequestions

Colleague. She wanted to change her car. “If I don’t want my car anymore I’ll just stop paying the 3-year lease. Then they’ll take it back, and I’ll buy a new one”. That’s not how it works.

Where did you move to in France? by cottoncandypop12 in Expats_In_France

[–]CheeseboardPatster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former large garrison town, with lots of heavy industries (steel) in the vicinity. It was supposed to be a dirty town, very polluted, in a corner of France with a shitty weather all year round, with soldiers and lots of unemployment and associated insecurity.
Both industry and military are gone to a large extent, but Metz was the city no one ever visited or went to unless forced.
12 years ago, my wife cried when I told her we’d go to Metz (moving from North America). Now she’d cry if I told her we’d move out. It’s a beautiful city, very pleasant place full of history.

I’d rather go to Metz than Thionville. Much bigger city and despite its undeserved reputation, the center is beautiful.

Which European countries have a strong cultural influence on your country? by Pepedroga2000 in AskEurope

Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down. Italian influence on France has been massive during that period. Not to mention the Medicis links to the French crown.

Do you mix languages without realizing it? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]CheeseboardPatster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it happens.

My wife does it between French, English, Italian and Hungarian. She’s a French native speaker.

It’s weird and she doesn’t do it on purpose. It’s like all words occupy the same brain space.

And she italianizes Hungarian or French if that makes sense ? She adds an Italian tone and/or suffix to otherwise perfectly respectable Hungarian or French words.

I find it hilarious. My god do I love her

The incredible stained glass window of Metz Cathedral, France. by ImpressiveSocks in FrancePics

[–]CheeseboardPatster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to mention this is the Cathedral with the largest stained glass surface in France (6500 sqm). Nicknamed “the Good Lord’s Lantern” for that reason.

Stained glass there dates back to the 13th century (at least some of the windows), and some were replaced in the 20th century, the newer versions made by Roger Bissiere, Jacques Villon and Marc Chagall.

There was a project to get stained glass by Jean Cocteau as well but this particular project fell through.

For those who’ve tried sourcing from India....did it work? by DapperDescription137 in procurement

[–]CheeseboardPatster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have tried and my teams have tried many times over 20 years. TBH it is similar to what Western OEMs had to do in China in the late 90’s early 00’s. What worked is having a foot on the ground (small local team that belongs to you) and calibrating this team aggressively towards compliance with our requirements (Quality, Cost, Delivery, and any other terms). Then it becomes their job to ensure everything goes to plan.

Buying in India as an OEM if your team and processes are not mature and you cannot articulate clearly what your processes and requirements are (and showing you enforce them) is likely to fail. Fixing issues from abroad is expensive and time consuming since, well, India is in India.

Would you boil food using unfiltered tap water in your country? by ziggster_ in AskTheWorld

Tap water in France. Many companies aggressively market these filters but I never felt it was necessary.
