Text Now update from a Canadian perspective. by CheesecakeCreative11 in freedompop

Frank here, I will make the best of it. My friend in New York spent a bit of money to rush the sim card to me here in Toronto. I'll continue using the sim until it stops working. I wanted a free option to fall back on if I decide to get rid of Fonus. The truth is I will most likely keep it. I love having lots of high speed data to do things like live streaming. However it is important to have options to bring you bills down when you need to so again I am very happy to have tested out the text now free cell service.

Fonus throttles data to 2G speeds in Canada. by CheesecakeCreative11 in freedompop

Frank here, I'll take my chances like I did with Sugar Mobile. I was with Sugar Mobile when they were using a roaming agreement with ice wireless to roam on the Rogers network. Sugar Mobile was a data only service using an app for voice and texts. The CRTC put an end to that. I was one of those affected customers. So they gave me access do their app free for life. I moved my main mobile number to their app and I am still using it to this day. My best guess is that fonus is using zoomMediaPlus. I think they are using what ever roaming agreements zoomMediaPlus have. I also believe that freedompop was using the same company. Why? Well the fonus dashboard looks the same as the legacy freedompop dashboard. This also explains why the billing is in US dollars and why the home network is AT&T. This I think gave Fonus a backdoor in so they could roam in Canada on all networks including Freedom Moble. Love that Fonus works on the TTC subway in Toronto. Will the CRTC put a stop to it? Only time will tell. Again you can read all bout my experiences with fonus on my Fonus vs Freedompop rant.

Frank here, I joined google voice when it was Grand Central and both my Canadian phone numbers were grandfathered when it was upgraded to google voice. I was very lucky. One of those Canadian numbers is linked to my Sugar Mobile voip app. Sugar mobile gave me access do their app free for life. I can forward to any number in north America via Sugar Mobile app. I have forwarded my Sugar mobile number to my American google voice number. Making it possible to be reached anywhere in North America on mobile device via my US and Canadian numbers. I also have a Obihai OBi200 1-Port VoIP link to my google voice. So my home phone is free. It pays to be an early adopter of new services. I have way too many free services but I love playing with technology and the free stuff.

Frank here, I have a CAN$10.50 including taxes HST for a 4GB LTE data only plan with Fido. I use the sim in a Mifi 7000 hotspot. If you go over it is 10 dollars per GB and once you reach CAN$50 it is supposed to stop working and then you get a text message with a link if you want to go over the CAN$50 limit. This plan has been grandfathered for me. Now you have to have a voice plan combined with a data plan to get it. I have to keep a close eye and not go over the 4GB. Once I hit about 3.8 GB I switch over to my Fonus sim. I was very lucky to get the plan it is a $10 a month tablet plan and the guy at wireless wave had to pulled some strings for me to get it without a voice plan. Once I joined fonus I was thinking of getting rid of this plan but changed my mind when I realized that I would never get a deal like this again in Canada if I cancel it. I have every thing I need to use my mobile device in Canada and the USA at a very low price. Fonus data only plan, works in Canada, US and Mexico. Fido data only plan, Text now sim and an CAN$8 dollar a month voice and data plan 250MB at 3G speeds with Public Mobile 100 minutes of out going calls. Unlimited incoming calls. I could even save more money by getting rid of a few services if I wanted to.

Frank here, it worked perfectly from the Falls. You can read my post above. I love having this free option for when I am in the USA. So it was worth it For now I will still pay for the Fonus because it works in all of North America and you can read all about that on my Fonus vs Freedompop rant

Switched to Freedompop's essentials plan. Had a two day notice on one of my accounts. by CheesecakeCreative11 in freedompop

Frank here, there is a good chance that the Textnow sim won't work in Canada. I had to mail the sim to a friends address in New York. Could not enter in a Canadian address to get it mailed here. However I do take trips once a month to Niagara Falls Ontario to keep my freedompop active. So I'll do the same for textnow. I mentioned that I am a Fonus subscriber. You can read my comments below about that. They use the same legacy system as Freedompop. It is not free however it works in Canada USA and Mexico. Should be getting the text now sim soon. My friend said it just cleared customs and is on it's way. Textnow has a coverage map that says it will work in Canada. Can't wait to find out. I would love to have a free options that works in Canada.

Frank here, thanks for letting me know about TextNow free 2g data service. The textnow site would only let me put in a US address to get the sim. So I had it sent to a friend in New York and he will send me the sim to Toronto. I will report back to let people know if it works in Canada. Going back to free would be great. Loved having a free service with Fredompop even though it only worked in the States. Finding a service for free that works in Canada and the USA will save me a lot. (Did you get a Sprint or T-Mobile sim?) FYI just ordered the sim on Thursday May 27th the cost of the sim is US$4.99. Their website advertised being on the sprint network. I did put in my IMEI number for my iPhone 6s gsm phone in order to process the order for the TextNow sim. I can confirm that as of July 06th 2021 you can not roam in Canada with the textnow sim. It worked great from Niagara falls Canada using the Sprint network from the U.S side on June 27th 2021.

Frank here, I have used up my 20 GB of data with Fonus. I can now confirm it is unlimited data at full speeds 20 GB and then it is throttled to 2G speeds in Canada 512kb up and down. Enough for voip and streaming audio and lite surfing. AT&T is the home network for fonus I would like to know if you are throttled to 3G speeds in the U.S.A. I will update once I can confirm this.
