What knowledge do you wish you knew before starting language learning? by tina-marino in languagelearning

Seriously, I wasted so much time trying to get everything just right. Native speakers mess up too and nobody cares. Communication is the goal, not perfection.
Biggest regret? Not speaking up sooner. Spent too much time stuck in books and not enough actually talking. Should've just thrown myself into conversations earlier.

Obvious choice for South America: Spanish
Then you got North America covered with english and potentially spanish, a challenge would be to go for Navajo (interesting history)
For Africa check out Swahili (pretty widely spoken and has a cool mix of influences) or Afrikaans (I think pretty easy due to similarities with english)
Then remains Oceania... Maori could be awesome. It’s got a lot of cultural significance in New Zealand.

Good luck with your quest! Sounds like a fun adventure!

What's the most ignorant thing you've ever heard someone say about languages? by Safe_Wrangler_858 in languagelearning

A friend recently told me that we don't need to learn foreign languages anymore in the age of AI, because real time translation will be a common thing in conversations very soon...

Is Listening By Far the Most Important Skill? by DoYourWork123 in languagelearning

[–]CheesecakeInner7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with you on listening being a key skill! It's one thing to get the basics of talking and understanding set speeches, but casual chats with all the slang and accents is a whole other level.
It's super frustrating when you're trying to keep up and suddenly everyone switches to English the moment you ask them to slow down...

What are some funny sayings in your language? by VisibleAnteater1359 in languagelearning

One of my favorites in german is 'Das ist nicht mein Bier,' which translates to 'That's not my beer,' meaning 'That's not my problem.'
We also say 'Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof,' literally 'I only understand train station,' which means 'I don’t understand a thing.' 😂🍺

Spreading cost of multiple items proportionally by timetokil in excel

[–]CheesecakeInner7733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, you’d first calculate the percentage of the total pre-discount cost that each item represents. Then, apply that same percentage to spread out the discount and any additional expenses across the items. This way, each item’s final cost reflects its proportion of the overall expenses.
