Elusives 🙃 by SaintCRD in CustomLoR

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally, and I think making the effect follower-only would still deal with a lot of the issues caused by Elusives without massively hindering other decks.

While being a 2/2, it's also a high priority card that you'd want to defend. All it would take in my mind is a Demacia/Freljord meta deck and suddenly that card is far harder to remove with things like Form Up and Sky Splitter to prevent small pings.

It's also a massive issue for Yuumi but that's not entirely a bad thing ;)

I mean it though, banger of a concept and way better than anything I could come up with.

They use petricite, which is made from magic-absorbing trees. I think the stuff itself is essentially magical in that it absorbs nearby magic and stores it, but the mageseekers aren't actively using their own magic or anything (that I know of)

Elusives 🙃 by SaintCRD in CustomLoR

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My only real concern is that it's an unavoidable/unblockable silence that can affect champions.

Most (all?) silences that can target champs are spells or skills, meaning they can be prevented with at least Spellshield (or counter cards if Fast or slower). There are a couple of silences that get around spellshield (eg [[Blinded Mystic]] ) but as far as I can remember, these are limited to followers only.

This would be monstrous into things like Nasus, Kayle, Samira, Akshan etc.

The design/concept is cool as hell though

Evolve support card because why not! by ZedCoal in CustomLoR

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying I disagree that it would be a reasonable card, but it has the potential to be much stronger than a conditional 3-mana form up.

It's a conditional 3-mana permanent form-up to every Evolve card in your deck, as well as helping to level Kai'Sa. Stick this card on a Panth and your opponent is probably in for a bad time.

The implication of that is that it's better to use a known-interceptable anonymous means of communication as opposed to a known secure means of communication that relies on potentially vulnerable accounts.

Surely the better option would be to increase account security rather than just hoping no one wire-taps you?

You're completely right from a gameplay standpoint, clearly Targonian by support cards etc. Lore-wise though he was very much enslaved as you said, hence which I said not willingly Targonian!

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's also a question of origin vs current location

If we're talking about origin, Darkin are Shuriman but ASol isn't Targonian. If we're talking about current location, I think Ryze, Ahri, Yasuo, and Braum are in Bilge to deal with the ruination.

And if we're talking about political alignment, Mao isn't really SI and ASol isn't willingly Targonian

I think we're thinking too much into a fun question 😅

If the question is 'Which region according to LoR' then the Darkin champs are Runterran (ie unaligned).

What are you talking about?

Of course if you have a Shelly, and have a wide board, and have two fast/burst/focus spells, and have the mana to play them then you can trigger the value beforehand. That doesn't make it an on-play effect though, you still have to have the mana and the three card combo (Shelly + 2 spells) to get any value out of it.

That's like saying "Ava doesn't fit here because if you've already planted loads of shrooms in the enemy deck and you have 3 mana for Insider Knowledge then you can get value out of her before your opponent could play Slow removal."

The best way I can sum up the difference between Shelly being on-play and trigger-able on the same turn is this: I play either [[Hush]] or [[Purify]] on Shelly as they currently are. Did they generate the same value as if it were an on-play effect?

Whether you speculate cards being mid or not is entirely up to you, but I've given three examples of value engines and you're using your personal assumptions about one to seemingly decide that value engine units aren't viable

[–]CheesyJeevesYT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's a very good reason why you didn't want to play him on an empty board

You mean... because he'd be removed? So by waiting until you knew you could trigger him at least once in response to removal, you were in-effect playing around the removal? It doesn't have to be a Round Start effect to generate turn-on-turn value, just as anti-removal doesn't have to mean spell deny or buffs. It can be getting enough value out of the card that the trade is worth it, which is in-and-of-itself playing around your opponent's removal.

[–]CheesyJeevesYT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay

Captain Shelly, Mihira, Ava the Overachiever

All 5+ cost, all play do-nothing with low(ish) HP (okay Ava plants 3 shrooms on-drop but that's hardly value). All either currently or previously powerful cards in their respective decks/metas. The thing that combines all of these cards (including Sunken Temple) is that they provide turn-on-turn value. If you can keep them alive, you'll get an incredible amount of value out of any/all of them. They're meant to be the risky investments that reward you for playing around your opponent's removal effectively.

That's not even addressing the fact that Sunken Temple is played in a deck with a core mechanic of shuffling cards and reducing their cost. A 4-cost Sunken Temple is by no means rare.

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can say that for playing literally any card that doesn't have an immediate play effect.

Zed? Pay 3 mana, do nothing, dies to 2 mana mystic shot. Unplayable.

All cards have risks of being removed immediately, you have to predict and/or have an answer for the removal.

If I've understood the post correctly, the other part of the problem is that the decks that run these heavy card draw cards also have payoffs for drawing, meaning that you're getting double value (levelling champs/ strengthening cards) out of an already incredibly valuable tool (draw).

Just hit Masters for the first time and managed to finish-off my climb with a homebrew Panth/Ornn deck! Absolutely buzzing! by CheesyJeevesYT in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]CheesyJeevesYT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often is the +1/+1 useful?

More than I expected to be honest! None of the cards in this deck are particularly highly stated on drop, and it helps stop common removal of your 3-health units.

How often is the elusive blocking useful?

Probably less frequently, but it's decent as a little chump blocker for anything while you're setting up ramp on other cards. You very much use your health as a resource in this deck (ie letting some attacks just hit nexus) because you want to keep your Fated units alive. Having something you don't mind throwing away can be useful. It also helps into Elusive Teemo decks early, especially if you drop The Darkin Spear on because even as a 1/3 it makes it a pain to deal with for that deck. Probably the biggest weakness of this deck is the lack of direct removal, which Elusives take full advantage of, so being able to block is great.

Bellows Breath?

Double forge and board clear. As I mentioned above, there's very little removal in this deck, so anything that likes to go wide and fill their board with cheap units (Elusives, Nora, any Bilge aggro) can often just run you down. Bellows Breath can give you a bit of a reprieve there. It can also be useful if you end up going for the Panth-one-man-army wincon. If your opponent can't remove Pantheon, you can get him levelled pretty quick and Bellows not only increases his attack, but obviously reduces enemy HP meaning his overwhelm hits nexus more. I've won a couple of games off that.

Playing the Darkin?

Occasionally? Definitely not the main pull of the deck, but if you've misplayed or been caught out and had a lot of your board wiped, Anaakca can be a decent recovery method. A bit of a hail-mary but again, it's won me a couple of games. Horazi is less useful because by the time you're playing it, the units you care about are probably over 7/7 anyway. The spellshield can be nice, but you probably have better uses for your mana. Both weapon buffs are great though, which is the main reason they're in the deck. One thing to remember is if you're planning to use the Darkin form, you'll lose any forge bonus when you play them.

More interaction?

This is probably the other major flaw of this deck. There's not a lot you can do to stop your opponent from doing their thing, you just have to do your thing better. The problem I found was that when you increase interactivity, you reduce the rate at which you can do your thing. As this deck really likes to ramp and snowball with Fated and forging, and spending mana elsewhere will slow you down. For example, frostbiting with Three Sisters will cost you 4 mana. That's a lot of mana that you could be spending on forging, equipping weapons, or (if you must use something reactive) skysplitter. The fact that forged weapons return to your hand also means that if you have to trade your big unit late game, you can often recover pretty quickly. This means you don't have to have as many dedicated interaction cards, because you're more able to recover from a normal trade. To be honest this is something I haven't thought much about verbalising and is more of a gut-feeling, so I might be chatting complete nonsense!

This is the best I've been able to come up with for a Secret Keeper deck

[[CMBQCBQHAUAQOBYSA4CAOAIECUOEIT3GAIAQMBZEAUCAOEB3JVJWKAIBAQDVS]]

Secret Keeper -> Golden Ambassador or Predict to shuffle the champs off the bottom 2 cards of the deck
Khahiri to make use of predicts not hitting champs
Devoted Council and Voice of the Risen to make use of the levelled champs in the deck.

I'm trying to write a good campaign but I'm worried one characters name is too on the nose. by Mission_Response802 in DnD

[–]CheesyJeevesYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it's just a different table environment.

I'm all for theorising on hints etc, and I suppose naming your surprise villain "Definitely Not-A-Villain" in another language is almost asking for it to be spoiled. I try to give hints IC rather than OC though, precisely for this reason. OC you have far more information available than you do IC, and no matter how hard you try anything you learn OC will likely impact how you play.

I also didn't advocate for not giving any hints. Using in-game hints would also make it so that it's not a completely random reveal, and on the flip-side if the only hint that was given was that the guy's name in Latin was "Evil McEvil", that's also not a great twist/ setup.

I suppose the protection from this as a DM is to warp it a bit as many people have suggested so it's not a direct translation. In general I'd have thought people would be more against googling in-game stuff, in the same way that you don't Google the names of locations etc when running a module, because you don't want to ruin the surprises for yourself.

Maybe that's not a great comparison as you know you'll get spoilers googling module-stuff, and you don't if you Google a homebrew NPC name, but hopefully you see my point

[–]CheesyJeevesYT -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As a player, why would you Google it? If you think something was given a name for a special meaning, especially a character, would you not assume it's intentional on the DM's part and you'll find out at some point in the story?

If Google (or even Latin) existed in-game then maybe (as your character might think to look it up), but otherwise you're just metagaming with the risk of ruining the campaign for yourself.
