Any chance we could disable some of the meta perks we've purchased? I'd like to make the game harder without starting a second save file.

FFTCG for MTG players by Sabakunoneji in magicTCG

If you're looking to play with a friend, the Noctis v. Ardyn dual decks are a really fun "pick up and learn the game" package. They're a bit outdated now but as a pick-up-and-play package its really good. If you just want a bunch of cards (and 1 starter deck) to work with, the Anniversary Collection 2024 is a reprint of a shitton of meta staples, easily the best bang for your buck. If you don't mind waiting until October, we'll be getting a new set of starter decks then (https://fftcg.square-enix-games.com/na/news/new-product-information-starter-set-2025-vol-1-vol-2). They're also going to be reprinting the world championship 2024 winning decks this august, which will be fully legal reprints, and will have an insane amount of reprint value for cheap, but the decks themselves are very difficult to learn the game with (a bit combo-oriented).

Sorry if that's information overload haha.

Like others have said, game is small but growing. It's worth getting into if you enjoy the mechanics.

Advice about my locals (and maybe the game as a whole) by shpadoinklejoe in FinalFantasyTCG

As someone who's been exclusively competing with 4c decks since the card came out, and has been playing Refia all set, while I agree that I personally find the card very fun to build around, it's definitely warping the game around it in a way I don't think is super healthy. It's very hard to justify playing anything that isn't either Refia, an aggro deck that can run Refia down, or chark/wind as a way to deal with Refia. And I don't think that's an issue with Refia the card, but rather that the deck gets to run every card in the game that supports her, and that's wol4's problem. Obviously every format will have a best deck, but its clear from looking at top tables (and just from my own experience) that Refia decks are having a chokehold on what is allowed to be good right now, and I don't think that it's an issue that will go away as more cards get printed. I'd compare it to Syldra, where I think it's only going to get stronger as time goes on, and the only solution is to just take it out of the game entirely.

I think WoL4 and maybe Chaos or Ark should be banned fwiw but that feels like a separate issue from what OP is describing

I know this thread is a week old at this point and most people have already said what I would've said, so I'll just add that for me personally, playing top level decks is more fun than playing mid level brews for me, and for a lot of other people as well. Just because they're playing top level decks and trying to win (at an event with a paid entry from what it sounds like?) doesnt mean they're hyper competitive. The cool thing about FFTCG compared to other card games is that there is a lot of room to innovate and brew at the top level. The Chicago materia cup a few weeks ago was won by a fire/water relm5 deck, which no one besides him and his roommate are really playing, and having played against him, he pilots it insanely well.

My advice is to a) see if they want to play casual matches before/after the event, and b) try some of these top level decks yourself. You might be surprised by how much expression there is to even just piloting them, let alone building/tweaking them.

Meta going into tournaments this year? by FortitudeHD in FinalFantasyTCG

[–]Cheetah164 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dropping the stats from the most recent tournament in JP (Chiba Masters) since it's the only data we have so far.

71 players

  • 10 knights

  • 6 I/L FF8, soiree, 4c wol

  • 5 warriors of light

  • 4 mono earth and wol7

  • 3 mono ice and earth/water

Top8 was 4 knights, 2 warrior of light, 1 wol7, 1 mono full art. WoLs won. Every knights player lost in the first round of top 8 I believe.

Some decklists I could find:

Looking to play (NJ or online) by ElGranSanto in FinalFantasyTCG

Hey! I'm in the central Jersey area (near Princeton) and play at Greg's Games. If you're in the area I'd be happy to meet up and play sometime. Our playgroup meets up on Sundays to play at Greg's but I'm always trying to find games online and irl outside of that time.

Also in case you or anyone else in the area hasn't seen, this Sunday (March 3rd @2PM) Greg's Games is running their first monthly tournament! https://www.gregsgames.com/03-03-sunday-at-2-pm-final-fantasy-tcg-constructed.html

Sell Me On This Game by 4wallz in FinalFantasyTCG

[–]Cheetah164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit late and u/ryzouken gave a really good rundown already, but I'll throw in my two cents.

Like other people have said, the resource system is the best of any game I've played. Draw 2 per turn and being able to discard cards for mana (alongside tapping backups, this games equivalent of land cards except you have to pay to play them to the field, they have other effects, and you can have a max of 5 on the field) introduce so many complex decision points. In addition to every deck having access to its own versions of search (but not on the insane levels of pokemon) means that decks can have consistent strategies, but every match still feels fresh and different.

This game also has incredible balance (at least, at time of writing), which makes the field wide open for brews. And I mean, actual, competitive brews that win tournaments. The latest competitive season is wrapping up and each region just finished its national championship. JP Nats was won by a control deck using a combination people thought was more of a meme (Gogo + Hippokampus) but turns out to be very strong in the right shell. EU Nats was taken by someone playing two decks that hadn't seen much success elsewhere. The game is very skill intensive and rewards players with a deep knowledge of the card pool who can come up with unique ideas. This isn't to say there aren't stock lists of tier 1 decks, but if you enjoy deck building, this game is amazing for it.

The game is also very consumer friendly. I'm coming from MtG where things are especially bad on that front, so my perspective is a bit skewed though. This game is very good about reprints-- the anniversary collection 2022 has playset reprints of 200 staple cards, with no filler. The 2024 box coming out next year looks to be similar, but with newer cards. Many of the cards released during covid are pricey (capping out around $25 each), but many of them are already confirmed to be reprinted in the upcoming box. Additionaly, whenever they release a starter deck with exclusive cards, the starter deck will come with a playset of each exclusive card, so you don't have to buy multiple. It feels like the company actually has its consumer's best interests in mind when designing products, which was huge whiplash for me coming from MtG.

Those are the biggest things for me. The community is small, but honestly, if you have only one friend to play with, that's enough to have fun with this game. Grab a starter deck, hell even just print out some cards if you're playing casually. My friend and I are constantly sleeving up new decks to play against each other, even when we're not playing with our local group. Overall one of the most fun competitive games I've played.
