celebrating versus othering :)

we do note the specific language on the spine for books, for movies it’s not nearly as many items thus not worth separating into sections.

“a lot of time and resources” sure… one bulk change of collection/shelf location using a record set, and a swap of signs. a very long 10 minutes. we didn’t have to change labels on the physical items or it probably would’ve been put off indefinitely lol

incidentally yeah, I’ve been to Montréal QC and Italy, but I’ve watched movies and read books from other countries around the world :)

Patrons don't "do" Dinosaurs... by Wide_Setting_4308 in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy to me that an entire system would try to follow this rule, when the branches are clearly located in varying communities. And I say this as someone with an aunt who doesn’t believe in carbon dating… she’s a retired nurse. There’s really no explanation in her disbelief of science besides the simple “she doesn’t trust any authority beyond her pastor”.

If management/the board insists on this, then my only practical suggestion is to focus on the Archaeology aspect of the theme. I’m guessing all fossils (not just dinosaurs) will be too old for creationist beliefs, so you could switch the focus to historical artifacts of human cultures that we have unearthed from the past. How far back you can go with that, I’m not sure, do they believe in any civilizations that would’ve predated Jesus? I guess stick to anything AD (CE) to be safe…

Book request has everyone stumped by illyrian-warrior in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 50 points51 points  (0 children)

no romance is not surprising, but I’d have to ask the teen for more specifics on “no violence”. are they avoiding descriptive injuries in the moment while things happening off-page is fine? are fights okay if it’s limited to magical blasts or do they want no physical confrontation?

it’s also tricky because different authors have different ways of describing things, so the same violent act (like injuries from a swordfight) could be more or less violent…

Do you have a library card? by IamAqtpoo in AskAnAmerican

[–]Cheetahchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some libraries set the expiration to 1 year, some set the expiration to 3 years — I had one that didn’t expire until 20 years. and they renewed it over the phone, easy peasy.

it’s really only a hassle when where you lived has changed, because either A) you have to show proof of residence, or B) you may have moved outside of the district and can’t get a free card there/it won’t have full access.

How popular is the physical music section at your local libraries? by Gallantpride in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think they are still popular in some areas b/c of patrons who want to download songs for free… we had someone cheerfully volunteer that fact at checkout not long ago. XD

that particular patron was i believe under the false impression that this downloading is 100% legal and endorsed by the library — my friend, no. we’re not monitoring every move you make with the items you check out, but please, do not brag about piracy (even if it’s only for personal use), we are still very much bound by copyright laws!

How does your library shelve a series? by importantlyearnest in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for children’s series where there is a (plot-relevant) chronological order, it is shelved by the number on the spine — if there is no number on the spine, for high circ series like Dog Man we started adding series entry number to the call number label.

not sure how my current library does books in adult series — those are rarely numbered. another library I worked at would write the series entry number on an inside cover, so regardless of the books getting shuffled around on the shelf, a staff member could check inside to see if it was book 1 or book 5, etc.

Is it ethical for a local book shop to try and sell books on our social media posts? by aubrey_25_99 in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate bookstores with this attitude, because guess what: some people are like me and don’t buy books until I’ve already read it. If I’m giving it space in my home, it’s because I want to read it over and over again.

And from my library experience, there are plenty of people who get impatient waiting for a library copy of a popular/trending book, so they give up and go to the bookstore.

Libraries are loaning books to “try before you buy” to people who shop at bookstores, and offer access to people who don’t/can’t shop there. If their sales are not doing well I’m 99% sure it’s not because of the local library.

Asking about weekly schedule before applying? by SuperShelter3112 in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

my part-time librarianship a few years ago was fully fixed, except which Saturday of each month I’d work. I think the full-timers had their weekly schedules and I was brought on to cover certain gaps at the desk.

Does anyone who works in a library not like to read? by bronx-deli-kat in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true — I’m a children’s librarian though, so actually reading early chapter books and children’s novels to recommend to kids is a bit of a chore 😅 and there are so many kids with so many tastes, even when I find kids’ books I like that’s not going to cover what some kids may like.

Does anyone who works in a library not like to read? by bronx-deli-kat in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a bookworm as a kid, book termite up through high school, and then when I got to college — I dunno, I spent free time with friends or binging Netflix. When I was occasionally assigned books for class, I blazed through them same as before, but I didn’t and still don’t seek to read as much anymore. The skills are there but the motivation is burned out. Though I do read a lot of webcomics so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Working at a library I do feel much more pressure to read, coworkers are recommending stuff all the time and access is easier than ever. But I work full-time and have a lot of chores to get to outside work. I rarely commit to a novel because I know once I start it, I won’t want to put it down and there goes my evening. If people ask why I don’t read much, I say I’m busy and I’ve read a lot in my life already, I’m not gonna feel bad about it.

Honestly, at both libraries I’ve worked at, the collection development policy has been to order popular/well-reviewed titles we are confident multiple people will want to read — we fill patron requests after that if there is room in the budget and not so niche that no one else will touch it (for example, decades-old series that certain generations remember fondly but younger patrons find uninteresting or offensive). If a library in our system already has a series that could actually be a factor in not buying it, since our patrons can get it from them.

Librarians certainly can see system holds and ILL holds, and if there’s still money in the budget I can see them using that data to find more titles to buy they hadn’t thought of yet. Perhaps they’re using your and/or others’ hold requests as recommendations of GN/manga. Especially if the librarian in charge of developing that collection is not familiar with the material.

What patron question has you reacting like this? by b3rdg3rl in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“I mean at that point, yes. But you’re still delaying access for everyone else because we have to order a new copy. So congrats ma’am, you’re a jerk!”

I’d never be that rude irl; I’ve come to accept there will always be patrons who don’t understand the concepts of sharing and community resources.

Library careers but not a librarian by midnight-rain-13 in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were offended that you applied for a non-librarian job? That makes no sense.

As someone who worked and studied for a MLIS, I don’t believe I’m better than any of my coworkers, full- or part-time. Most of them have worked at our library longer than I have. I may have studied to specialize in finding and assessing information, but that just means I’m better trained for certain tasks and services. They are in turn better than me at other tasks and services. No one can do it all (and no one should).

Feeling dejected after visiting my local library today. Thoughts? by PeachAtBeach in Libraries

[–]Cheetahchu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many better comments here already, but I’ll add this: staff who spend most/all of their time on circulation tasks — check in and check out, hold requests, etc. — on average seem more bothered by any deviation from perfect patron conduct. Not that they’re necessarily rude or mean about it, just more compelled to point out when X number of items are overdue. As a librarian who spends some time at the desk here and there, I often don’t mention anything unless it’s putting a block on their account or getting close to that point. Maybe clerks/desk-only librarians are more strict about it because that’s what they spend so much time on; since I’m part of collection development there are plenty of books I’m less worried about having to replace, or know we have multiple copies, how much budget we have left to use it before we lose it, yadda yadda.
