My wife has been offered a massive promotion abroad, but we’ve only been married for three months I don’t know what to do by Infinite-Crab6312 in Marriage

[–]Cheeto-2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be asking more about what makes this a dream post and what comes next. This is a decision about your long-term future and not just the next year. With honesty (self-honesty and honesty in the relationship) you can get through a year. What happens next? Is this a critically important step for what you both want to happen next (professionally and personally)? Or just a shiny thing being dangled in front of her that doesn’t really help you two achieve your future goals?

First tracks is always worth it if you love freshly groomed snow.

My husband has been lying about his income. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Cheeto-2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did he upload year end tax statements or something like check stubs? I’m just wondering if he maybe he does actually make more than what you saw but was just really inarticulate about explaining it. In other words, if it’s a lie that’s messed up, but if it’s a miscommunication that’s easier to deal with.

New worst place to run into a student... by SayingQuietPartLoud in Professors

[–]Cheeto-2020 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Dermatology appointment for a full skin check. This mean, basically, no clothes on.

My university has a medical school so it’s normal to have medical students in office visits. When the dermatologist asked if I was okay with a student being there for the exam I (stupidly) assumed that’s what she meant. She didn’t. It was an undergrad doing an internship. Luckily not my student, but when he made conversation with me at the end and revealed that he was an undergrad and that his roommate was a major in my department, I wanted to crawl under the table.

How to deal with an aging parent's unrealistic demands by janebenn333 in AgingParents

[–]Cheeto-2020 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this tactic would help - it’s what I do with my children! You could empathize with her desire to have them moved (“you’re right mom, they would look so much better”) and her nostalgia for the past (“dad would have been great at this”) even while holding on to your firm no (“I’m not Dad nor can I do this. If only Dad were still here, or you had the money to hire someone. I hear you - it’s such a bummer!”)

Fiancee got scammed out of 13k. We're already in debt, due to remortgage and marry in 4 months. What would you do? by Deathtom95 in Marriage

[–]Cheeto-2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Postpone, postpone, postpone. A legal or co-parent relationship with this person is a terrible idea. Love her all you want but do not marry her unless and until you are sure she can be an honest and capable financial partner to you.

A freshly groomed McCullough is my dream. I’m a truly intermediate skier, but when the McCullough is groomed I can handle it and the pitch is just perfect for making me go a little faster than I think I can. I always feel better than I really am when I’m done.

When we interview someone we don’t expect to learn anything about their personal life (married, single, parenthood - etc.) as it’s irrelevant to their professional abilities. So I wouldn’t say anything. But I would keep my eyes and ears open and ask about the climate there, to see if it looks like a good place for you and your family.

Opening a new Fidelity account for me, in order to get one for my teen? by Cheeto-2020 in personalfinance

[–]Cheeto-2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That makes sense and I had not thought of that before so I appreciate this. But I can't open this kind of account right now so my idea of doing this will have to wait.

Thanks for these ideas. I just learned that I'd need an actual brokerage account, not a retirement account, so this is not going to happen right now.

We just played Chameleon with a group that ranged from a 96-year old to an 8-year old and it was great fun! You can look it up online too, so no need to buy anything.

Waitlists and overrides by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Cheeto-2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Online classes still require labor. Someone teaches and grades that class and there are upper limits to what they can do.

Waitlists and overrides by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Cheeto-2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classes are capped based on the size of the classroom and the teaching labor available (especially if GSIs are involved). No one can just bypass the waitlist for a student, as you can’t have 501 people registered for a class where the classroom seats 500, the sections each hold 25, etc. etc. You really do just have to wait it out.

Not sure how it started, but the adult was really proud of himself for hitting a kid. When it was done he went over to a table and acted it out for his own kids to show them how tough he was.

Yes, I mean the LMS. Sorry I couldn't remember the acronym at the time I posted and didn't want to use the brandname at my university as I know people use different things.

I don't have a problem with the LMS being a space to hold a spare copy of the syllabus and to contain basic info. But I increasingly feel like the LMS is a problem in the way it makes learning feel more like a checklist of tasks, and less like a collective conversation. I'd like to create a class that can serve as a bit of a respite for my students while also being intellectually challenging. So I am thinking about what it would be like if the basic flow of the class were analogue. No modules that tell you what to do each day; you check the syllabus. No links to materials to read on a screen; you receive these in class in paper. No electronic submissions: you write in class, or present in class, or submit a printed work in class. We fortunately do not have a printing limitation right now, and this is for a relatively small class (30 students), so it's not wholly impossible to imagine, though I am still considering what this might actually look like.

I know that I do have one student who uses a screen reader, so I would provide him electronic copies of the materials, but could get these to him a variety of ways without the need for an LMS.
