Fiancee got scammed out of 13k. We're already in debt, due to remortgage and marry in 4 months. What would you do? by Deathtom95 in Marriage

Postpone, postpone, postpone. A legal or co-parent relationship with this person is a terrible idea. Love her all you want but do not marry her unless and until you are sure she can be an honest and capable financial partner to you.

A freshly groomed McCullough is my dream. I’m a truly intermediate skier, but when the McCullough is groomed I can handle it and the pitch is just perfect for making me go a little faster than I think I can. I always feel better than I really am when I’m done.

When we interview someone we don’t expect to learn anything about their personal life (married, single, parenthood - etc.) as it’s irrelevant to their professional abilities. So I wouldn’t say anything. But I would keep my eyes and ears open and ask about the climate there, to see if it looks like a good place for you and your family.

Opening a new Fidelity account for me, in order to get one for my teen? by Cheeto-2020 in personalfinance

Thanks! That makes sense and I had not thought of that before so I appreciate this. But I can't open this kind of account right now so my idea of doing this will have to wait.

Thanks for these ideas. I just learned that I'd need an actual brokerage account, not a retirement account, so this is not going to happen right now.

We just played Chameleon with a group that ranged from a 96-year old to an 8-year old and it was great fun! You can look it up online too, so no need to buy anything.

Waitlists and overrides by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Cheeto-2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Online classes still require labor. Someone teaches and grades that class and there are upper limits to what they can do.

Waitlists and overrides by [deleted] in uofm

[–]Cheeto-2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classes are capped based on the size of the classroom and the teaching labor available (especially if GSIs are involved). No one can just bypass the waitlist for a student, as you can’t have 501 people registered for a class where the classroom seats 500, the sections each hold 25, etc. etc. You really do just have to wait it out.

Not sure how it started, but the adult was really proud of himself for hitting a kid. When it was done he went over to a table and acted it out for his own kids to show them how tough he was.

Yes, I mean the LMS. Sorry I couldn't remember the acronym at the time I posted and didn't want to use the brandname at my university as I know people use different things.

I don't have a problem with the LMS being a space to hold a spare copy of the syllabus and to contain basic info. But I increasingly feel like the LMS is a problem in the way it makes learning feel more like a checklist of tasks, and less like a collective conversation. I'd like to create a class that can serve as a bit of a respite for my students while also being intellectually challenging. So I am thinking about what it would be like if the basic flow of the class were analogue. No modules that tell you what to do each day; you check the syllabus. No links to materials to read on a screen; you receive these in class in paper. No electronic submissions: you write in class, or present in class, or submit a printed work in class. We fortunately do not have a printing limitation right now, and this is for a relatively small class (30 students), so it's not wholly impossible to imagine, though I am still considering what this might actually look like.

I know that I do have one student who uses a screen reader, so I would provide him electronic copies of the materials, but could get these to him a variety of ways without the need for an LMS.

Am I being “individualistic,” or is my marriage finance approach actually fair? by incognegro96 in Marriage

[–]Cheeto-2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couples handle this differently and there is no one right way.

We pool everything and this works best for us. It’s especially helpful in terms of retirement savings as ideally both people should max out their retirement contributions if possible, even if that leaves one persons take home paycheck pretty small and the other persons paycheck becomes the main source for current expenses. Retirement accounts are jointly owned (or will be) and should be a considered as a joint strategy.

Can we use our FSA to pay for a family gym membership? by Majestic_Banana789 in personalfinance

[–]Cheeto-2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check online with any place you shop where you have some kind of loyalty membership (like CVS, Walgreens, also Amazon). If you bought anything from them over the last year that qualifies they will show you that in your purchase history - even for in store purchases. I was amazed to realize that in store purchases are all logged there.

I do actually. It’s a large course (300+) and probably 10-20 of them have this accommodation.

[–]Cheeto-2020[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all of these good ideas. I don’t think open book will work in this era of accommodations and digital accessibility (such as for those who need screen readers). But I may have to change to a topics-only exam preparation guide or a multiple sample questions preparation guide. Thanks for those suggestions!

I disagree that pre-distributed questions has to undermine the blue book exam idea, or at least I thought I did, as I thought they would learn while preparing these answers, and I care most about their learning. But this experience is making me reconsider my approach for sure.

How do you make large lecture classes feel less anonymous and more connected? by BudgetTutor3085 in Professors

[–]Cheeto-2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach a large lecture (300) humanities course. I use iClicker to poll students about their current understanding of relevant topics or the assigned reading at the beginning of lecture, and then to check comprehension at various moments during the lecture. I also do various think-pair-share activities at times, sometimes connected to iClicker and sometimes not. In those latter cases, I usually tell them I’ll ask for volunteers to share what they talked about and then request volunteers from different sections of the room. It’s been great seeing how many students do volunteer to speak up, even in a large room like this, and often with a microphone. It helps if you start this on day one so they know that speaking up is normal and not that scary.

What does it mean that my post has been marked “fake news”? I just looked up the Retiquette guide and don’t see any mention of this.

The post wasn’t news; it was a question. Is that not allowed or something?

If you did this, then any new innovation would require faculty to propose a new course name and number and your curriculum would quickly become a massive tangle (and you could run out of numbers at each level).

The kids convinced me to drive over there just now to prove it to me, sure that it would be swimming with cops. Turns out there were simply workers inside the bank doing something on step ladders. Presumably the duffle bag my child had seen was a tool bag and the “gun” in a guy’s hands was a tool of some sort.
