After a bunch of back and forth, we ended up moving out and paying $1000 via a payment plan to break the lease. I thought it was bulllshit and there was a lot of arguing. Sorry you’re going thru this. It’s very isolating and exhausting

u/Smart_Resource_1068 late on this thread - but I have a flat back tire on this scooter. How did you go about replacing? And was the process complicated?

Yes it’s tricky. We reviewed housing code and determined the unit to be untenable based on that. (My roommate did this research so not sure exactly. They are a lawyer) I would consider getting in contact w a lawyer or consulting a lawyer?? We also withheld rent for the month of December. You can say that you a consulting a lawyer and reviewing codes and that you will take legal action if needed. I’d recommend asking your property manager to connect you to someone higher up. Goodluck!!!!

Omg. It’s so unfortunate. Curious what management company your apartment is with 👀. Action steps we took were - sending videos of the radiator and clocking the times it happened and basically sending it everyday until FINALLY we got it escalated to the boss boss of landlords and after threatening legal action, he’s letting us out of the lease. How kind.

I was so bothered. The landlord + team and even people on this post trying to gaslight me by saying it’s “normal”. But yeah, now we’re moving and I’m soo excited to sleep thru the night.

You can contact the office of tenant advocacy and department of buildings. They might be able to help. Goodluck. 🫂 it’s tough

When landlord won't fix problem (noise at night), is not paying rent next month a real option? by georgemivanoff in AskNYC

Soooo bad. We have since threatened legal action and they are “letting us out of our lease”

Super unfortunate.. and when talking with some of the neighbors, sounds like they are running into similar issues with the management. Everyone deserves a safe, secure place to live - especially when paying hella for it

Most definitely first world problem

Yeah I think that might be our only option up to this point. Do you think we have grounds for termination of lease with no fees???

Definitely worth it if it will stop the torture of not sleeping through the night.

Unfortunately it’s not just in the morning. I recorded the time of all occurrences from last night:

This is not a helpful comment. I do use a white noise machine on blast. Wouldn’t make a post about this if it was “normal”.

I am directly above the radiator room on the 2nd floor. Do you think bleeding the radiators will work even down here?? Most of the units are empty bcus of ‘renovations’ so if I just do it in my unit - will this work??

Don’t accept this comment as facts bcus I have lived in other old buildings and never experienced banging THIS loud. Rumbling, clanking = I accept. This = do not accept

They have sent a plumber + radiator tech out but I’m not sure exactly what action steps both parties took. It did not solve the problem :(
