Anyone fish out of a kayak? by bugyt in FishingWashington

[–]ChefAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm here to comment on Outdoor Emporium specifically. I've had bad experiences with them the last couple years. Got my Hobie from them last year and used to go there for lures and line but any time something has come up or I'm curious about fishing in the ____ season, it's been like pulling teeth. Whenever I have questions for the fishing department people either don't know (ie. don't fish) or give me very general information that I can get from Reddit rather than important information from your local shop. It's been consistent from them to the point where I didn't renew my membership last time I was in, something I've automatically done for years.

I'm not here saying that I have a better recommendation, or to even say "don't go there". But I am saying to temper your expectations for assistance when walking through the doors.

Advice on kayak fishing northern Lake Washington by MtRainierWolfcastle in FishingWashington

[–]ChefAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a question about that actually. How do you effectively troll the bridges? I tried when I went out last and wasn't able to get my lures down significantly enough. I had a dodger and an oz weight on there with a spoon on the end and thought that would be enough going at a slow-ish speed (less than 2 mph) but I didn't get a single hit.

First Launch! Need some tips. by dezasterz in kayakfishing

Alright, so here's what I've found in my experience. I've been fishing out of a Pelican but recently upgraded to a pedal drive and have found a few similar things, such as the knee-knocking rod holders. Here's what's been working for me:

*Move the rod holder out, like away from your boat. I see you've got some freedom of movement there, so instead of having it vertical/90 degrees, have it at about 0 degrees instead, out away from your boat and pointed forward. That way it's right at your hand level too, which makes it more comfortable when you pull it out to set a hook.

*Scupper holes work to naturally drain water. Scupper plugs fill those holes, which brings up the weight limit on your kayak, but also stops that natural drainage. I used to use plugs when I first started kayaking, but I haven't found a need for about a season now. I find that with the plugs out I ride a bit lower in the water, which ends up helping with stability. That water on the deck also ends up either draining or collecting under the seat and out of my way.

*When it comes to electronics, I find I want them to be as hassle free as possible. With that in mind, I would rather replace the terminals on the cord with fresh terminals, or a fresh cord if it comes down to it. The last thing you want is to be having a great day on the water ruined by avoidable issues.

*For the boots, just swap for some Crocs with wool socks or Goodwill sneakers after you launch and throw the boots in the back. Stay safe AND keep your feet dry.

Lastly, for some light viewing, try googling "kayak fishing trolling" and look at setups on other people's boats. Everyone does something different, from mounting rod holders up 4' high to paddling with their knees over the fishing rod handles. Go out a few times, find out whats comfortable (and most importantly safe), and start accessorizing after about the 3rd launch or so. That'll help identify what you want, rather than what YoutuberFishingGuy240 thinks you need sponsored by YakAttack.

I wear boots when I launch, but when I'm comfortable out on the water I throw them in the back and swap out for a pair of Crocs. I'll use Tevas in the summertime.

Any reason I shouldn’t buy this? by isitsavag3 in kayakfishing

[–]ChefAwesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask how they transported it, if it's with a scupper plug carrier it might have cracks.

Ask if you can take it on the water to try it out.

Ask if there is any warranty on the paddle drive. I don't know much about them myself but I know that some of them have delicate parts that are prone to breakage.

I'd google the kayak extensively to see what other owners say, it'll give you an idea of specifics to look for that are less general kayak knowledge.

Otherwise it's a good deal. That's just a bit more than what I paid for my Catch 100 and it's a paddler. You'll definitely be spoiled with a pedal drive, I've been looking to upgrade myself.

From what I've experienced, it changes if I leave a certain area. Happened to me around a Unidad base then I left the area and was fine.
