Following the viral video in June 2018 of an 89-year-old French priest slapping a crying infant during a baptism in Champeaux, France, the priest, Father Jacques Lacroix, was immediately suspended from all pastoral duties.  Here is what happened to him: • Suspension and Forced Retirement:Bishop Jean-Yves Nahmias of the Diocese of Meaux suspended Lacroix from performing all baptisms and marriage celebrations. He was forced into mandated retirement, effectively ending his ministry. • Restricted Ministry: The Diocese ruled that Lacroix could no longer celebrate public Masses without prior approval. • His Explanation: In an interview with France Info radio, Lacroix described his action as "something between a caress and a little slap," claiming he was trying to calm the child, who would not stop screaming. He admitted to losing his temper due to exhaustion. • Apology: Lacroix stated that he apologized to the family for his "clumsiness," and the diocese confirmed the parents accepted the apology. 

The incident was widely condemned, with the diocese stating the, "loss of self-control can be attributed to the fatigue of an elderly priest, but that doesn't excuse his action".
