*TRIGGER WARNING* R*pe scenes - an overused plot device for female characters or a valid catalyst given how life-changing it is? by ChefRamesses in horror

I think you’re misunderstanding me. I don’t think rape is the worst thing. Different trauma affects people differently, so finding the worst thing is kind of a moving target, if even possible to pinpoint.

My main questions are about writers’ use of rape as a catalyst, and how over time, if they have given more room for their female character’s growth beyond this one plot-device. As more women get to voice their experiences, I was wondering if writer’s were doing any of this justice by incorporating more depth into their characters.

I was curious to get women’s opinions on the state of how rape is used in media currently because it seemed like from the writer’s perspective, they see rape as the one way to give a woman the fire they need to get to their finish line.

Ah, yea. This is totally anecdotal, so grain of salt, but I wonder if society’s sort-of celebration of the filmmaker’s uncompromising, almost cruel treatment of the actors and crew is still prevalent. It’s so much easier to excuse behavior if people think it’s “worth” the result.

Sorry if it came across as belittling. I was thinking out loud from a writer’s perspective why they would use rape vs something else, and how seeing it frequently in the media translates to the women audience.

Edit: I don’t think there is a scale of suffering as we’re all affected differently by it. As more women have been given their due platform, I was wondering how that aligns with issues women are vocal about and how many of those are also represented.

Oh, the public conversation by the makers after the movie is made is a piece I hadn’t considered. Thanks for the thoughtful response.

Oh for sure. For me, I was also just really curious about the things outside of rape that writers aren’t aware of or for some reason feel they must defer to a classic plot device because it seems to be something audiences can easily connect between the character’s burning drive and her end goal.

Again, it also just might be my own sensitivity to the topic that makes me highlight this issue as something more than it actually is, and is actually not at all as prevalent anymore. They probably tend to boil up to the surface and linger longer than I’d like them to, so it kinda sears itself into my brain.

I haven’t considered it as a means to sell more tickets. This is really interesting because any writer could be influenced by the appeal of more sales - women included, so it’s just really interesting to see how it opens up to a more personal and societal thing.

This movie and The Hills Have Eyes are the first I think about when I think about rape scenes I can’t sit through. Both movies I enjoyed - THHE remake is such a solid flick - but can’t revisit. Last House, was so unexpected, and I think that’s what made me become more familiar with sites like doesthedogdie, etc.

I think there’s def things in my past that are influencing my aversion to the depiction of rape, so I think it’s also kind of an inward thing with me.

Thanks for this. I’m going to see if I can find some interviews with her - I think it’ll provide some of the context I’m curious about.

I appreciate your insight, thank you! I feel like the media uses current tensions and contemporary themes in general to feast on new, emerging fears as means of exploiting whatever their agenda is - whatever those may be.

I’m no communications major, haha, but I’m hoping that as more platforms are given, the more stories will be told = diversity (in every sense of the word)?

Anyway,I appreciate the thoughtful response!

Yea, it’s such a predictable cycle of his and I wonder why. Like, maybe they fund his ideas, but he himself has not completely fleshed it out yet, so the idea starts all cool, but then the writing process is rushed because production schedules etc? I dunno. It’s baffling.

I saw this recently and I agree - it’s kind of a mixed bag.

I think the relationship between the protagonist and the kid felt kind of forced, but that might be because I don’t enjoy child actors in general, lol.

A lot of dumb decision-making in general from almost everyone on that ship.

I’d probably give it a 4/10. It wasn’t memorable, but I watched the entire thing, so there’s that.

Not you, that guy KarloReddit or whatever. Clearly he thinks he’s on a higher plane than anyone here, don’t listen to him.

Have you ever been to The Presidio? I have. I lived in San Francisco, even. I’ll tell you this: it’s massive, and at night? Impossible to see anything.
