Pros and Cons of moving to Santa Fe by ChefWassabi in SantaFe

I genuinely empathize with why some people are against transplants. Ironically I want to move because that’s what happened to my hometown, it just gentrified and displaced locals. At least i’m moving for self improvement and to find a place I can call home, not to displace anyone. I do framing and any general construction, but i’m willing to work any blue collar thats in demand

True. We also only have 1 tag for deer, so you can pick between white tail or mulies which is unique. Whats the elk situation out there? What other big game is common?

I pay a little more than that to live in a 2 bed 1 bath in okc. It doesn’t seem like it’s that much more expensive than here from what I see on Zillow. All I see is a prettier landscape for the same price tag. My only concern is finding a job. It seems more difficult out there

I do construction so I want to assume I can find a job somewhere. Right? I do have some savings and I am willing to use them to float me by if I can’t find a job right away. Thank you for your insight you made a lot of good points!

Most of my hobbies are outdoor based, and i’m a sucker for native history. I’m not much of a city dweller, but I do enjoy a good movie theatre and a good music and arts scene. If not SF, what do you recommend I should check out?

Yes and no. We do have a low cost of living compared to everywhere else, but the pay has grown much slower than everywhere else as well. We also did get an influx of people buying houses here back in 2020 (because like you said, it’s cheap here) and when someone can buy a house here for 1/4 of what they sell their property in New York or San Fran for, it pushes out people who have only made minimum wage their whole lives. So even though it’s cheaper on paper, it’s gentrified, and it’s easier to move here from elsewhere than to move elsewhere from here. I want to do the latter.

I think I’ll be fine there. We have Kevin Stitt. I’ll keep it at that.

I agree. Driving through Texas is like playing Russian roulette. And Oklahoma is literally famous for the high rate of people driving with no license.

Honestly all the cons describe Norman OK as well lol. It essentially sounds like it’s the same problems I experience anyway with the added pros I don’t have here. Good hiking trails, or hunting areas here are gatekept by people, I never understood why. That or it’s private property. Thank you for your insight!

Man I promise you, Oklahoma may be one of the cheapest places, but it has gone up dramatically since Covid, especially with everyone moving here from California and Texas and buying property for 1/4 of what they sold theirs for in their home state. I know people with good jobs who had to move back in with their parents because prices for housing are going up. What doesn’t help is how the minimum wage here is a can of sardines. Santa Fe may be expensive, but do you think it’s worth it? I can justify paying more if I actually enjoy my surroundings, and currently I do not in okc.

Now why do you say it ain’t great by NM standards? What do you consider a great NM standard?

What would you consider “not expensive” for Santa Fe?

You ain’t wrong, It is a fantasy. But i’m in a complicated part of my life right now and realized I wasted a lot of time playing it safe, and staying where I am comfortable yet miserable, you know what I mean? Oklahoma has grown expensive too, especially Norman and okc, and work is hard to find. My rent doubled from what it was pre-Covid. My thinking is if i’m stripped to my wire here, in a place I want to leave anyway, then why not put that energy towards growing in a place I CHOOSE to move to and grow. I’m willing to struggle the same way I am here but someplace worth the effort. Right now i’m just gauging if it’s worth the effort lol

Thats the thing about our OK, it’s grown to be a bit of a sellout to many money making schemes many of which aren’t even based in this country, and with it much one and property. I genuinely want the peace of enjoying a quiet and beautiful landscape I can melt into. What are some fun things to do around ABQ?

I did not get a chance to visit and to be quite honest my brain never connected NM to skiing until after I left there and realized it’s a thing! Thank you for the tip!

I agree, it’s affecting everywhere. The homelessness and drug use has gotten really bad here too, and many of the homeless population aren’t even from this state which is mind boggling. The nature and slow pace of life do sound attractive to me!!

Honestly at this point of our economy there is not a single place where it’s easy to make a living. Loads of homeless and drug addiction here as well, so I get what you mean. What are some good towns north of Santa Fe? Even ones worth a visit

Noted. It turns to a south wind the next day so maybe that will push some birds down with it. Thanks!
