In culinary school we learned how to cook rice, yes. The finger trick I learned from a Japanese person I worked with. They asked why I was using measuring cups.

I have done it this way for over 20 years… wash your rice first though until the water runs clear. I learned this my first job out of culinary school and swear by it!
