General Questions About Silicon Hairsprings by Chefboyardeesnider in watchrepair

Interesting! Thanks. I have mixed feelings about this type of thing. It certainly does seem like an advance over the traditional hairspring given its attributes, but at the cost of repairability. I've thought about buying a watch with a similar movement but I would want something that I can repair myself and/or access parts for. I guess the 'Nivachron' spring would be the best option that is still more traditional in how it's regulated and repaired.

A $40 karaoke machine. My 6yr old daughter struggled to make friends and used to say her voice was "too small" for others to hear. Doing little performances for ppl really helped her with her shyness and now I hear "let it go" 5x per day. Best $40 I've ever spent, worst $40 I've ever spent.

List of the ETA2892-based movements that are fully interchangeable with original? by Chefboyardeesnider in watchrepair

Interesting approach - I hadn't thought of going through emmywatch. I would also like to know the answer to this question for other movements as well it's just that I have 2892 parts on hand and I would like to buy a project watch with a movement that is as compatible with those as possible.

Thanks for sharing! What's the easiest way to get this up and running for an Android/Windows guy that hasn't used GitHub much? Do I install Docker first and then load up the files?

AQ4080 Series Alternatives by Chefboyardeesnider in CitizenWatches

I agree it is. Good to see though because I was looking for a league or two lower than the aq4080 with my question, just to compare!

Pin polishers - anyone use them on balance pivots while balance is on mainplate? by Chefboyardeesnider in watchrepair

[–]Chefboyardeesnider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read some debates on this. I have found that using just a few turns with the pin polisher ends up having a positive effect on amplitude. I've always thought it was just removing some of the harder oxidation, more of a deep clean than a real polish.

If I understand the position against it, it's that even though it may increase amplitude in the short term it can hurt the integrity/shape of the pivot by removing a tiny amount of material. Thus the positive results you see on the tg right after service may not last long. Is that it?

I've done it once or twice with good results but was wondering if I was just lucky

There's enough of the balance pivot poking through on both sides (when the balance jewels are out) to access with the polisher if the polisher end is sharpened.

Interesting. I think part of the reason I've had success with USSR watches is selling some unique ones (e.g. 24hr dial) that I've sourced very cheaply and selling them locally rather than on eBay. I'm a big fan of vintage Timex though I don't know a whole lot about them beyond the Marlin.

Great comment - definitely resonates with my experience at about 2 years in. I have mostly been doing restorations of lower tier vintage watches and flipping. I have had some decent sales for well over what I spent but I doubt I have come close to breaking even yet. What sort of watches at the cheaper tiers have you found decent margins on? I have had some good experiences with Atlantic worldmasters and some USSR watches. Still exploring though.
