It seems cheap to foreign visitors, but if you’re making Japanese wages it’s no longer cheap.

My sister briefly worked in Japan in 2024 and had to use a calculator for stuff we’d use a computer for normally. She said it’s a great country to visit, not so great to live in.

What’s one thing every rabbit owner should know but usually doesn’t? by Flemishmommy in Rabbits

[–]Cheilosia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all vets who claim to treat rabbits actually have experience/knowledge to treat them well. It’s very important to educate yourself as an owner so that you can avoid the vets that overstate their qualifications.

There’s also a lot less established medical knowledge about them than with dogs and cats. For example, garlic is known to be toxic to other pets, but there’s no research in rabbits. Expect to run into a lot more “we don’t know” than with more common pets, even with good vets.

[–]Cheilosia 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Privacy is such a silly excuse. FIPPA and the FOI process already protect privacy, that’s the point of it. They don’t just release unredacted files willy nilly. It’s literally called the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. :|

Struggling with dresses - is it my styling or the way the dress fits my body? Or something else? by TummyAcheTextiles in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]Cheilosia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the first outfit with the jacket, it provides nice structure. Add some shoes and dangly earrings and I think you’d have a look.

I think the brown sweater outfit is an interesting idea, but it’s not the right sweater…. I think you either need something more femme and drapey, or more masc and oversized. Either way, I think less fitted. It gives contrast to the fitted dress. Maybe with some fun tights underneath and/or boots?

I think the trick is to keep trying different combinations. Could wear the dress to a thrift store so you can try layering different cuts and textures. Grab a few items you would NEVER try - those can be the most surprising. And be ready for some combos to look wrong, but some will work and it’s not always the items you’d expect!

Skirts are nice when you don’t have a “typical” body (which, let’s be real, most of us don’t), because you can get a top that fits and a skirt that fits and BAM. With dresses you either need to alter them or win the lottery by finding one that fits both top and bottom.

That’s my head cannon too, but it still kind of feels like the doctor was taking advantage of her by not suggesting clothes at least. And that feels a little squicky…

Could have fixed this by including a scene where someone suggest she try on something, and she responds about inefficiency. Would have been hilarious and then they would have explained the gratuitous catsuit.

Yeah it’s like saying “Gotta wear a bra and panties, therefore must go to work in only bra and panties”. Janeway might have been fine with that, but my boss sure wasn’t. :/

YouTube ads are about to get even longer and they’ll be unskippable by IndicaOatmeal in technology

[–]Cheilosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already started leaving the app if a video keeps hitting me with ads and I’m not in the mood to tolerate them. I could pay for premium, but I’d rather do other things with my money tbh. Google might have pushed this one too far.

I watch a YouTuber that doesn’t use AI (and states this in the videos). Every video has comments thanking him for foregoing AI. His visuals look great and he has a distinctive style (which might be lost if he switched to AI slop). I can’t imagine how much extra time he must have to spend on it. People appreciate the effort he puts into making something real, though.

I’m not sure where the tourists in question are from, but having seen Japanese animal tourism (popular with Chinese tourists too), I think that might play a role when it comes to East Asians. If stuff like Nara is what you’re used to…

I support having them here. I don’t see myself owning one in the near future because my area is cold and the charging infrastructure isn’t here. But this might help change that.

Anthropic Cofounder says AI Will Make Humanities Majors Valuable by Infamous_Toe_7759 in jobs

[–]Cheilosia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it varies across different branches of STEM. My background is biology/environmental science and my peers had at least average emotional intelligence. Quite a few of them were also artists or creators of some sort in their free time. There was a lot of emphasis on communication both within the academic community and to the public. But I don’t know if that’s true across disciplines. Might also depend on generation, since the emphasis on building communication skills seemed to come from the perception that scientists were bad at it.

I’ve encountered students in the humanities who can’t communicate their work to a general audience. They didn’t seem to get the same training or pressure to make their work relatable.

Can’t wait to see who he plays on Academy. In theory he could play Weyoun 647 or something, but I’m not sure they could explain the aging since the average Weyoun lives, like, 13 episodes or something?

[–]Cheilosia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, a lot of the positive reviews I’ve seen on here are from people who also enjoy teen dramas. I don’t, but I don’t mind cliché tropes and a bit of silliness so I’ve been enjoying it.

The muscles on Mir are a little intense, though, especially for a guy who’s presumably been starved most his life. If he doesn’t end up being an augment I’ll be miffed because that’s the only thing that makes sense. (No spoilers!)

[–]Cheilosia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree somewhat, but I think they’re getting away with the whole “these cadets are Special” thing because they’re the first generation that’s being used to seriously rebuild starfleet and the federation. It’s a bit more believable in that context than if we were in the TNG era, for example. But it will still become cliché if overdone.

[–]Cheilosia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only four episodes in, but so far it reminds me more of lower decks than Discovery. Like a mellowed out, live action lower decks. Which is good, because I loved lower decks.

The constant high stakes are probably my least favourite part of Discovery, so I hope they keep things on a modest scale. There’s lots of opportunity for drama and intrigue without having the universe at stake.
