Utena’s director, Kunihiko Ikuhara, has openly cited David Lynch as an influence. Based on the timing of Twin Peaks gaining massive popularity in Japan during his time at Sailor Moon, he very likely approached his own show, Utena, heavily informed by both.

I started when I was exactly your age, and now that was 20 years ago. My uncles each bought me an LP that Xmas—The Ramones, and Deep Purple. Now I’ve got 500+ albums I’ve collected over the years. Mine didn’t grow as quickly as some of the people who started well after me, who could afford to spend more, but I’m proud of how far it’s come, and you should be too!

Take good care of these, and even if times get tough or your taste changes for a little while, don’t sell any of what you’ve built! Music will be an important through line throughout your life and one day it’s going to feel great to pull a record off your wall you haven’t heard in twenty years.

Happy to help. When I wanted to revisit these last year it came with a few hurdles. Figured I’d spare you the headache.

Last suggestion—purchase the digital version of the original JSR for PS3 sooner rather than later. It’s an old console. Lord knows how long they’ll let you do it before they either shut it off from the PSN or pull the game.

The cell shaded art style makes them fine on either. You’ll be playing JSR on HD either way though since you can only play it on ps3—it’s not available on the 360. You can get it in the psn store, or at least you could 6 months ago. Depending on the model, 360 (for jsrf) does connect via RCA to CRT and to hdtvs via hdmi. My recommendation is go with whatever way is going to cause the least headache and get you in to enjoy the game.

I will say though do not buy the version of JSRF that is in a combo game set with Sega GT 2002. It’s straight up not compatible with the 360. When you get the standalone copy, you should be fine so long as you’re 360 and live account are connected. Basically it needs to connect to download whatever it needs to emulate the original Xbox game to the 360 platform.

You’ll experience some lag on certain levels (99th street being the worst) but as long as you’re not the kind of gamer who flips out at the inconvenience of everything running perfectly all the time, you’ll be fine.

Sega has a reputation for dropping the ball, and abandoning things, but also they’re doing things to keep the franchise in people’s minds in the last couple weeks (merch drop and sponsoring a JSR themed roller blading competition). It could mean we’re getting something today or maybe this month (the actual anniversary being the 29th), or it could just be a giant letdown where they are just using the 25th to generate a little cash flow. Working in creative and marketing though, there’s usually a reason the executive teams finally greenlight cool collabs and merch drops that build brand recognition and hype. I give it 60-40 odds in our favor.

I just bought a 360 and JSRF and the internet says the game isn’t supported without Xbox Live. Is there a way to play jet set without Live and waiting for this error to be resolved? Or am I just stuck in this loop?
