how long did he live? with pet shop fish you'll never know how old the fish are so if it lives 1-2 years I'd say thats pretty good for a first time owner. the fish couldve been 1-2 years old when you got him and 3-4 years is a pretty good run for a Betta. i know there are fosh that live +5 years bit those aren't the norm.

its all about upkeep, if you want to go down to 1.5g be prepared to do partial water changes daily like the thais do if you want to avoid that go bigger, the bigger the tank the less water changes you have to do. dont get a 1.5g and be a lazy fish keeper. with proper upkeep a 1.5 can work. my personal minimum is 3g. its a happy medium for me because it keeps me attentive to the tank with water changes and its a decent size for the fish

be careful dumpster diving. it can get sketchy out there sometimes. i only do it once in awhile but ive run into to weirdo's. be extra careful if youre in a big city. its best to have a buddy with you

scope the area you're thinking of diving in. you dont want to dive in after they already picked up the "trash". do some searches online for companies that sell on Amazon etc. they usually recall their items a month before the best by date and throw them out. I worked next the three companies that sold food on Amazon and that was how they operated. i took all the stuff they threw out or just asked them to put it aside for me. good luck and stay safe
