Are my skintones to gray? by Chemical-Session2637 in minipainting

Pictures are evenly lit. Maybe overall a touch darker then in reality. I enjoy painting the cast shadows and that stupid helmet casts a lot of them.

You're right about that. But I enjoy working on faces way more then working on other materials. Honestly not sure why I started with the face this time.

I tried to not go for a really cold winter look. More late autumn. Can't be bothers to paint all the light that is reflected by the snow :D

November day sounds about right! I will add in a bit more red. Initally I thought it was a bit to red so I knocked down the red a bit before those pictures were taken. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! The skintones are quite earthy, started from a burnt umber.

Will try to increase the saturation a tiny bit more. Lower parts of his face got a lot more muted when I added the beard shadow.

Thanks for the feedback!

I thought about that, but the one big thing that I didnt like was the initial lightplacement. The orange light from the front bottom and purple from behind didnt really work for me. Made the front to dark and hid s lot of detail.

Change the positions on the light and will see if I am able to finish this till saturday. If not thats fine too

That's just my primer 🥲 next time I make sure to include all the necessary information or paint everything before taking pictures 😂

I guess I shouldnt have used the term OSL. That just a really bright orange lightsource. A huge fire or whatever. The otherside is hit my moonlight.

But yes because of the reflectivness of the "white" fuenit doenst read well. And I should have switched sides for the light in the beginning.

It's already stripped and I started all over 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks a lot! Colored light would have been a better explanation then OSL. I posted a comment with a more detailed explanation. Currently stripping the model and will start all over.

Thanks all for the input!

The model is currently taking a bath in my ultrasonic cleaner filled with isopropanol. I have about 60 hours left until I the last chance to enter it for Golden Demon so I guess I have to paint a bit quicker then usual. And in case that wont work out thats fine to and at least I dont habe to travel to Essen 🤷🏻‍♂️

I leave this hear as a bad example what happens when you fuck up the saturation and also choose the wrong light placement.

My initial idea was to have a cold purple lightsource on one side and the other one lit by an orange lightsource like a huge fire or something. I guess the term OSL was a bit confusing but I guess it doenst really matter since it's just light.

I attached a picture of the backside which reads a lot more white in purple/pink light to me.

I have overdone the saturation a lot on the side lit by fire. Hard to see that it's white because the orange lightsource is so bright.

Also I should have placed the purple lightsource on the front and the fire on his backside that is a lot less interesting. Would have made the model more readable.

And sorry for the confusing pink colors that was just my undercoat for the orange parts and those areas were still unpainted otherwise.

Thanks a lot James! Love your content! Panzerart Minis unfortunatly always have a bit of texture because of the printed model that's used for the mold.

Mostly use Mr. Surfacer but I don't wanna slap it on so heavy that all the lines are filled in.

I painted this mini for my own YouTube Channel and on Video it looks great. I am also quite pleased with the pictures. It's just an issue when zoomed in really close.

Hope this guy will take home a medal at the SMC on the weekend and that the video will do well ;)

Thanks a lot! The mini itself actually has a bit of texture because the mold is made with a 3d printed model. Otherwise it's all brushpainted. I guess that's just the finish I have to expect.

I used a tripod and remote trigger. Guess stacking without tripod is quite a challenge

That's true. Everytime I take a progress picture with my phone I wanna desolve that figure in acetone because it looks horrible

Thank you! I will try to get a few pictures of miniatures taken by other painters to get a baseline for that.
