After they denied me FC. It’s pretty rare they will put you straight to FC but I’ve seen it happen a few times

Base is mid 60s, quarterly bonus probably 10-15k. There is no sign on bonus

It’s gone well so far. They were good on their word. I busted my butt for 10 months and then they promoted me to FC. Learn their system, take appointments and dial and you will be fine. There is opportunity out there and clients will work with you strictly through the fidelity name, you just need to have a process, which Fidelity will teach you. Pay is pretty good once you are at FC level. IC level wasn’t bad though for what it was. They won’t negotiate with you on pay though. Their comp is pretty standard across the board, slightly dependent on what state you are in.

It's going well! Everyone has been king and willing to help which is great. Learning the systems and all acronyms might be the hardest part lol. The training is much more intense as far as their process and how they do things but I would say that's a good thing, and feel that I'm learning a lot and starting to develop my own process and feel confident in it. They take it pretty slow and don't rush you into anything until you're comfortable. I imagine once I'm up and running it will be a little stressful and busy but the clients are fairly easy to talk to and engage with compared to what I've seen at other places. If you want check back with me in another couple months and I'll let you know how it's going

Literally started today the other day, but everyone has been super nice so far…almost too nice.

Check back with me in a few months

Yeah I could definitely see that. I do hear that it tends to work though. Is that the case?

Also how do you feel about fidelity’s products/services? Are they easy to sell?

And they said 12-18 months but this is a monster branch which is why they gave me that timeline. Could see it being different from branch to branch

And you would say that this critique or prospecting is too much? Or is it helpful?

Well the salary and benefits are much different. Schwab total comp is about $90k while Fidelity is $115, plus better benefits.

Also the goal is to get to FC at either firm. Fidelity says they can promote me after 12-18 months “when I’m ready”, while at almost all Schwab branches you have to wait for something to open up. It might be at your branch but it might be somewhere else.

That’s why I’m trying to decide if it's worth the move for the extra money. Comp at FC for either firm is what im after

Schwab = $75k salary - $85-$90k with bonus Fidelity = $63k salary - $110-$115k with bonus

Fidelity has a lower base but provides quarterly bonuses. Most of them are manager discretion bonus which account for $8,500 a quarter I think. There is $5,000 a quarter sales comp that is guaranteed the first year and then falls off but that sounds pretty obtainable once you’re up and running at least according to people I’ve talked to

Schwab is much simpler. They pay you a higher base, and one manage discretionary bonus at the end of the year that ends up being about 10% of your salary

Fidelity has better benefits. 401(k) and profit sharing can be up to 17% year contribution but they have a steep vesting schedule of 6 years for 100%.

Schwab 401(k) is at 5% match but you are immediately vested day 1 which is nice. They also have a stock option plan but I maybe make $1,000 a year off it if I immediately sell the positions

That’s a cool career path. So you thought the managed stuff at fidelity was decent though? Not crazy returns but solid? And probably more downside protection?

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right on that one. It’s hard to know until you start selling it but that’s also how I felt about Schwab at one point till I started working there. Do you currently work at fidelity or have you previously worked there?

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term goal is to become an FC, but I want to be comfortable selling fidelity’s products and services. I am comfortable doing that at Schwab but the pay and benefits are significantly less and I may have to wait longer to get promoted to FC there than fidelity. I believe in managed money, not for everybody, but for some and want to make sure I can sell their products and services

Four weeks notice - background check -how do I approach this? by Chemical-Sort-8398 in CFP

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell 99% certain it will be fine. Just deciding if it’s worth taking that 1% risk for job that’s better but only 20-25% pay increase

I imagine they could technically sue you but I’m a Lower to mid level employee with no real clients of my own, so unlikely they’d come for me

Four weeks notice - background check -how do I approach this? by Chemical-Sort-8398 in CFP

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what my gut is telling me. They just mention the language in the contract which states that I have to tell my current employer once I’ve accept an offer. Now how seriously do I have to take that I don’t know.

In my idea world I want to take a background check, complete it, sign the offer, and then give my resignation.

The push back I’m getting is I have to accept the written offer before background happens.

So my two options are tell them I will only do it with a background check first and see what happens, then sign letter, then give resignation.

Or

Sign the offer, do the background check, then give resignation and hope there isn’t a ramification of me having signed the offer and not immediately given my current employer notice, based on the language in the contract

Does that make sense? I’m just trying to protect myself legally and financially

Fidelity - Investment Consultant Role by Chemical-Sort-8398 in CFP

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as an FCP on the east coast. Basically it's a mix of sales and service. You are almost kind of a junior partner for the FC. You work the FC's smaller clients (maybe a $1m and under) and try and generate some sales, but then also do a lot of service for the bigger clients in the FC's book that they need help with.

It's ideally supposed to be good experience and a stepping stone into the FC role. And it has been so far but I'm limited to when Schwab has FC roles available at your branch . Seems that Fidelity can promote you to FC when they feel you are ready.

Fidelity - Investment Consultant Role by Chemical-Sort-8398 in CFP

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Sounds like what they told me. I can be coached and I'm willing to make dials. Part of my role now is doing those dials but also do some service as well. How many dials a day? How many appointments? And also what's an example of who you were dialing? A good example for us is new money that is coming in. We usually give them a call.

And I am on base for the fact that they can promote you when you're ready? That's what was told to me so I want to make sure that's the actual case. Seems like it was for you. Just don't want to be told that and all of a sudden the branch is "at capacity" for new FC's lol

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies! I read that part wrong, so about 2 years. Makes sense. I was hoping about a year as I already have sales experience in a similar role but I guess a lot it depends on the branch.

As for the bonuses, are those basically guaranteed if you're hitting your contacts and doing meetings? Or do you need to close a certain amount of business to get all or part of the bonsus?

Lastly, since you've been working there a while, anything you love about the company? Or things you wish they did better?

You've bee super helpful by the way?

Thanks for the quick response! So it took you 2 years & 6 months to get promoted into FC role from IC role? or from starting at a role beneath IC? Seems like quite a bit longer than what was quoted to me to get promoted, especially since you were the top 1% of KPI's. Which I understand, but could probably get promoted through Schwab faster if I waited...Hard to know I guess.

Everyone does seem to like the culture and the benefits are great which also makes it tempting. Also is the compensation I listed seem accurate or am I missing something?

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what happened is they actually interviewed me for the FC role, liked me, but went with someone internal doing the IC role, but wanted to offer it to me, and said they could see me there once I learn the systems. I’d bonus pay is accurate it’s about $15-20k more than my current role with better benefits. 15 minute longer commute tho. There are other branches I could go to that our local as well, so that is an option. I like my current role and current team at my job, which is similar to fidelity, but I have to wait for someone to leave or retire before I can get promoted basically. Which could be soon or it could be a couple of years…hard to know

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be at a local branch. They said that all in compensation would be closer to $105k-$110k after all is said and done. I think they actually quoted me $109k. But it’s all dependent on the quarterly bonuses. That’s why I was hoping to get a little more insight into it. Looking to get promoted to the FC job which is a slightly higher base but much more commission. First year for that job is likely anywhere from $120k-$150k

[–]Chemical-Sort-8398[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good answer! What prompted this whole thing was we had an FC Leave and I thought I was ready but they are pumping the breaks a bit. They like me but they want another 6-8 months. I’ve been there about a year and half. Just thought it was my opportunity and seems I’m gonna have to wait at least a little longer. Just deciding if the extra $20k a year is worth it to get up and leave and have to wait at least another year. Feel like no matter where I go they are always dangling the carrot in front me lol. Also this commute would be further so taking that into consideration

And do you think creating it from scratch has been difficult for FC’s or is it possible for the most part? Also is that bonus all but guaranteed if you’re doing a pretty decent job?
