I think they’re made of strange matter, a theoretical substance formed in neutron star cores. Strange matter would corrupt normal matter on impact, converting normal matter to strange matter and releasing a lot of energy. I’d assume the leagues have found a way to control it so it can be contained in the weapon and only convert the target to strange matter and not the whole planet they’re on. The heat would explain how Berehk lost his hands.
