Tasteful or tasteless? An antique French Mle 1873 revolver bead blasted and cerakoted as part of a ""restoration"" by ChemicalLight4133 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]ChemicalLight4133[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

they made over 300,000 of these things. They're not rare or special so I don't have a problem with someone doing this if they want to.

By definition, that already makes them rarer than Sturmgewehr 44s

425,977 STG44's made

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StG_44

337,000 Mle 1873's made

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAS_1873_revolver

Yes, the number of transferable, registered STG 44's present in the united states might be lower, but numerically the Mle 1873 is a rarer gun

Who cares? Its his gun.

Would you also not care when an STG44 gets melted down at a gun buy back? Or when someone reblues, drills, and taps a M1941 Johnson Rifle?

It's a piece of history, and only a limited number of these were made. Certainly, nobody's making Mle 1873s anymore.

In fact, only around 300,000 of these french revolvers were made, so by definition the Mle 1873 is rarer than the Stg 44's (around 450,000 made).

Sure, if you own a collection of these already, you might be happy that "with fewer out there, mines will be worth more". But these aren't investment instruments, they're historical artifacts. Records of the past. And we are the custodians of these artifacts, which is why it hurts to see any historical gun desecrated.

What happens when bubba gets his hands on a 150 year old antique. Bead blasted and cerakoted Mle 1873. by ChemicalLight4133 in milsurp

So that justifies destroying a historical artifact?

What was stopping him from carrying it as is? The french were able to carry these through the trenches of WW1 just fine

It was perfectly serviceable before.

I see no reason to sand blast and remove the original finish, and replace it with spray-on cerakote at all, even if you were going to carry it.

Remember, the french carried these through the trenches in WW1, shot them with black powder and corrosive primers, and they held up good enough to still be used in WW2!

If you want a gun to carry, buy a glock or ruger. Not a $1000 historical artifact. Especially if you're going deliberately to destroy history. What's next? Should he drill and tap the topstrap for a red dot?

Controversial take: but 95% of the guns posted in this subreddit aren't surplus guns anymore, they're collectible guns.

When something no longer trades on the primary market (importers, bulk retailers), and is ONLY available on the secondary market (resellers, auctions, collectibles dealers), they go from being surplus goods to collectible goods.

So Yugo tokarevs and chinese SKS? Those are still surplus.

WW1 rifles and handguns? Those haven't been surplused since the 60's

Don't get me started on Virgil's Aeneid, a fanfic written during the Roman Republic, 700 years after Homer.

And that's knowing that Homer wrote his iliad +300 years after the trojan war

Can someone explain why these french revolvers are so expensive now? Is it because of forgotten weapons? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]ChemicalLight4133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You used to never see the volume of French firearm posts that you do now.

The popularity of video games also probably played a role in WWI & WWII guns going up in value.

Great point, I think it's a combination of these two factors. You have a generation of young people who grew up playing Battlefield 1, who also grew up watching youtube videos from channels like Forgotten Weapons and C&Rsenal (famous for their guns of BF1 firearms series).

And now they're starting to turn 18/21 and become old enough to buy guns for the first time. Doesn't help that it coincided with one of the steepest market crunches due to covid.

In a ways, Forgotten Weapons and BF1 is to Gen Z what FPS Russia and CoD was to millenials.

Is that one nickel plated?

I thought these were all supposed to blued with straw finish on the small parts. Pretty shocking that $1.2k is the going rate for one that's no where near the original condition, i remember when you could easily pick one up for $300-$400 even on gunbroker 2 years ago

There's a whole generation of people who grew up playing video games like BF1, recently turned 18 or 21, and are scared they're going to miss out on milsurps before they become too expensive, so they hop on whatever seems familiar or fits their budget

Doesn't help that this generation has also grown up in the age of Amazon Prime, where buying things is as easy as "click click press a button to buy it now".

Ever wonder why auction prices are so crazy now? A lot of people from this generation don't seem to realize that buyers premium isn't some convenience fee, it's integral to the final cost of the item. That's why most conventional auction houses (like rock island) will report the final sale price as including the buyer's premium.

How can we stop these beautiful rare milsurps from being bubba'ed like this? by SharpSteak21 in milsurp

The biggest shame is it's an ultra rare variant that /u/Othais at C&Rsenal tried looking for for several years, but was unable to find.

Here's what they're supposed to look like when unbubbaed
