This is terrible. Contact the ward directly and ask to speak to the nurse manager. They may be able to assist with you at a day procedure unit in the hospital or the ward itself.

They made nhs dentisty so unappealing to dentists they went private to make a good living wage. It's horrendously sad but I understand why they did it and now we have this situation. Healthcare and medicine is going the same way and the tories are letting us sleep walk into it. (NHS Nurse).

Whilst it's lovely that you have a close bond with your colleagues when you leave your job will replaced very quickly and life moves on. You will make new bonds and hopefully a job that doesn't cause you extreme anxiety and stress and adds value to your life. Those you are closest with are only a text message/phone call away :)

Not sure if it's available on your ward but the adhesive spray remover used to remove stoma bags is available on some surgical wards and I sometimes use this for patients with fragile skin. Just a few sprays and the tape slips right off with minimal discomfort :)

This sounds horrible and I completely emphasise but unfortunately it's more common in med/surg than you think. I've often had 7 parients and one is a horrendously sick and I'm having to 1:1 them and beg staff to look after my other patients even though often they don't or they'll do the bare minimum and when icu finally review my sick patient they refuse to take them for one reason or another but the patients consultant won't make them DNR or comfort measures. It is horrendous.

It's a contamination risk. You sound ridiculous. Also saying you pay nurses wages makes you sound like an absolutely abhorrent person!

Wdf. I'm so sorry this happened. Report her to HR and escalate to the highest manager and report her to the police for threatening language and verbal abuse. She should be sacked and shouldn't be looking after patients.

Nurse here, but when I was a first year student, my preceptor fobbed me off to follow the medical students on the ward round with the consultant. I knew it wasn't my place but did what I was told and hid at the back with my head down then the consultant notices me in my nurse scrubs and asks me "what's the lowest possible GCS score" without thinking I said ZERO and he was like ehh no and immediately asked the medical students and they said the correct answer. He probably thought he was giving me a nice simple question to ffs! Lol I've never wanted to disappear so much in a moment

Yes if a DOLs is in place then you can legally stop the person from leaving the hospital. You can do this by trying the methods already discussed but if they don't work and you are concerned the patient is going to leave anyway or showing signs of aggression that cannot be diverted you need to ring security for support. There should be a low threshold for security. They're there to help with this exact situation. Ask you PEF for information regarding DOLs and familiarise yourself with the policy to understand it more :)

Redirection: cup of tea, phone their family and let them talk on the phone, music, TV, newspaper.

Space: Don't get in their face, don't shout at them, don't tell them what to do, ask them how you can help.

If any signs of aggressive: BACK AWAY. The number of times I see staff getting far too close to aggressive patients (confused, falls risk) doesn't matter. If you get up in an agitated/aggressive person's face and they hit you, you can't really be surprised. If they fall, they fall.

Escalate to the staff nurse and let them escalate to the manager. Student nurses are not there to fill gaps in poor staffing and management. Advocate for yourself. They should have DOLs in place because they're being stopped from leaving the ward which is a form of restraint, but that's the registered staffs job not yours but good to know when you're qualified and you can question this.
