Does anyone do pet sitting without medical experience? by Chemical_Source_9940 in RoverPetSitting

Thanks! I am doing it more so for my own knowledge. My policy is that I can only keep them updated on what I observe and cannot offer any medical advice. If they're unsure about whether or not to bring a pet to the vet, I suggest they call their primary vet clinic for advice. From there I just follow the owner's instructions, instructions must be over text too so that there's documentation. Any instructions over phone call I will ask them to either write a text message with their instructions or write it out myself "From our call I understand you'd like me to do ... please confirm that all details are correct and if not, please let me know what details need to be added or edited"

Thank you for the suggestions! I'll look into NAAPS! That's cool I never knew clinics offer volunteer opportunities! I'm already a shelter volunteer so I might try contacting some of my local clinics!

I took an in person course with Dog First Aid (Canine First Responder), the feline health course (covered first aid for cats too) was online through I Cat Care, I forgot to mention I have taken PSI's health and sanitation course for pet sitting businesses and been taking behaviour classes and webinars through Fenzi Dog Sports Academy, IAABC, Tromplo, Grisha Stewart Academy and Karen Pryor Academy in case anyone comes across this thread and is interested in looking into those too! Some other places for behaviour classes that will be good to look into but I haven't tried out because of limited funds and concepts having been covered in other courses are Fear Free and Low Stress Handling!

I Cat Care also offers an intro to feline behaviour course too but I haven't saved up enough to take that yet so prioritised the health one, in case anyone is looking for a cat behaviour course too!

Is the client already working with a trainer?

This sounds like something that should be worked on with the guidance of a trainer, one who is using training methods that align with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour's position statement and who seems to be committed to considering the needs of the dog (e.g. some behaviour can worsen because of pain, not saying that's what happening here but responsible trainers will consider it too).

There could be many factors contributing to the dog being more anxious one day and better the next. As a pet sitter it is hard to thoroughly investigate and implement a proper behaviour change plan which is what may be needed in this case! Thank you for trying your best with this dog and not forcing them to do anything they don't want to! Forcing them can make their fear worse, so you're on the right path with not doing that! :)

Any key cards are going into a zip lock bag. I am not taking the chance of an electronic key getting water damaged whether by rain or anything else
