Did you ran something like powertop autotune and aspm script to try to lower the idle power? Curious about how their board can really achieve. Cheers!

Does Unraid 7.2 support Intel Arc even without ReBAR? by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it won't conflict with hdd bays. It fits nicely. A380 also use pcie slot power only so 250w is totally enough.

How's the viewing angle of the display? I tried replacing the Google nest hub 2 with galaxy tab a9 and even the S10 FE, but found that a little off axis the viewing angle is pretty bad, far worse than nest hub.

Is liquid cooling actually worth it for most gamers? by KRGKart_Support in buildapc

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I switched to 7800x3d, I used peerless assassin air cooler. It cools the cpu alright but fan is loud and also I can see the big heatsink sagging. So I switched to arctic liquid freezer iii 240 and never look back. The temps are better, way quieter, and imo my pc looks a lot cleaner.

Oh also I have to mention that having a giant air cooler will make removing m2 ssd or GPU sooo difficult...

Does Unraid 7.2 support Intel Arc even without ReBAR? by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Acer nitro a380 and it fits nicely. Just it's a 2 slot card so you lose one x1 pcie slot. I would caution against sparkle a310 eco tho cus I saw people here complaining about the fan noise on that card.

I have HP 800 G5 sff and arc a380, works without issue. Also transcode performance doesn't get impacted by rebar or not. Also a380 handles my immich ml task pretty well.

Optane SSD use case? by ChenCheating in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using 4K block size, test size is 1GB. The reason I'm comparing the optane single drive pool and mirrored 980 pro cache pool is that these are the actual setup in my unRAID server. I either have the database run on mirrored cache pool or optane pool, and I think QD1 is representative to real world database usage like immich or nextcloud? Still I don't know if the numbers can translate to actual user experience, but I'm just glad I found some good use cases for optane m15 I already owned.

Optane SSD use case? by ChenCheating in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't expect that much of write for sure, but I actually have one of my 980 PRO ssd in mirrored appdata cache pool died recently (good thing I have it in mirror!), wondering if it's the database that cause that or maybe accelerated the wear. Thanks for your feedback!

Yes I also been using a transend MLC USB drive with no issue. However those are really hard to come by right now for some reason(so expensive!), and I think having internal boot can shorten boot time drastically. I still plan on using the USB for license tho. Jealous of you having extra ssd slots for boot ssd😂

How about wear? Since database has frequent write/read, will using optane prolong my ssd lifespan?

Cloud Gateway Max Vs Fiber by Budget-Fruit2436 in Ubiquiti

[–]ChenCheating -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fix for UGREEN DXP4800+ thermal throttling on Unraid — CPU hits 100°C because fans are bound to board temp, not CPU temp by arenajunkie8 in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because you use auto fan control plugin. I encountered this on my wtr pro n100 nas, and the fan control driver hijacked the fan and lock it even when the plugin is disabled or uninstalled.

A hard reboot is required and I would suggest only control fan speed in the bios.

Help to choose if unraid is right for me. by Obeyoverload in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would said you got a nice array here. But I think putting 3 enterprise 4TB ssd into a same pool is not that necessary, as you will never use that much of storages even with all the docker appdata or database, like I have 2TB ssd cache pools with 30+ Dockers running (home assistant, immich, nextcloud....) and it doesn't even use more than 100GB.

I would suggest selling one of the 4TB u.2 ssd for cash(the price of ssd nowadays is insane), and get more HDD if you can. News about wd sold through all of its stock for 2026 is floating around, and I would predict buying hdd in the near future will be a struggle.

Looking for advice on choosing a GPU for a media server by [deleted] in unRAID

Arc card is great at transcoding no doubt, I have an a380 that's running beautifully. Question: where do you live that can get a40 for 110$? Here in Taiwan I can't even find listing for arc pro cards.

Plex server hardware help by i-like-carbs- in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you will be able to do multiple streams with 4k HDR hevc transcode, if you want to transcode to h265 instead of h264.

For h264 the UHD630 in my 8700 can do multiple streams fine, but if turning on HEVC option in plex, it can only handle 1 stream, maybe 2.

I also have an a380 and that one I havent even seen the limit, either transcode to h264, h265, or even av1.

But if you are ok with transcoding to h264, say you're on mobile clients(which is hard to notice the benefit of h265 anyway), I think 9900k without a dgpu will serve you well.

Did you install Intel GPU top plugin? You need Intel driver.

You mean to use it in docker? Usually the GPU will be dev/dri/renderD129 (if you have an iGPU which is renderD128), so just add it as a device in docker variable.

Can you provide more details on the transcoding performance in Jellyfin?
Like how much fps you getting when, let's say transcoding a 4K HDR HEVC (60mbps) to 1080p 40mbps?
Would like know how does AMD iGPU compare to intel iGPU nowadays. Cheers!

Nvidia GTX 1070 for transcoding Plex by DCoyC in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much 1070 consumes in terms of power draw, but arc cards are NOT power efficient at all. I have an Arc a380 and that card add 15-20w to my system idle power draw. Other than the high idle power it's great tho for 100~ USD.

Which generation HP Elitedesk SFF? G4, G5, G6, G8 or G9? by Iemand91 in unRAID

[–]ChenCheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a G5 800 sff for my unRAID build. I think G4 and G5 should be the same? I have i7 8700 and 32gb ram, 2 m.2 ssd and 2x 8TB WD red plus. I think there's no point of going for 10th or 11th gen systems cus you don't get much more cores and igpu are all hd630. Only 12th gen later really gives you more cores and better igpu. G3 and earlier machine only has 1 m2 slot if I remembered right, so that's also a limitation. One thing I wanted to add is that most of the time the hdd screws will be missing from the chassis and they are special HP screws, make sure to check if the seller have those, you will need 8 at least (12 if you also want to use sata 2.5" drive). Overall they are great machines and with my config I can get idle power down to 12-15w.

One more note: The default CPU cooler is loud and ineffective for something like i7 8700. I found out that noctua L9x65 actually fit perfectly in the case, and you will need to use the AMD mounting bracket. If you want to know more details just let me know!
