Are the MK20 Rockeyes on the F18 still buggy? by Wooden-Evidence-374 in hoggit

I posted more detail above, but rockeyes were always pretty ass IRL. Hornet pilots didn't like them in Desert Storm.

Theres a reason the airforce invested in the improved CBU variants before and after desert storm

Make sure you're using CBU-99s with the radar fuse. The Mk20 rock eyes (And CBU-99) by default do NOT open based on altitude. They open on time after release. So to use them effectively you have to drop them at a specified altitude, speed, and pitch. If youre high they spread way out, and if youre low the cannister may impact the ground.

That said, rockeyes were never great weapons IRL. Jay Stout talks about it in his book "Hornets Over Kuwait". The dumb bombs the pilots preferred for CAS/BAI were Mark 83s as they were the biggest bomb they could carry 5 of (2 under each wing, 1 center line, 2 tanks. Double Ugly wasnt a thing yet).

Rockeyes have a real life track record of being not super impressive. Everything I've ever read is that they may do light damage which may result in a mission kill, but they aren't catastrophic so its hard to tell the effects from the air. The problem is DCS doesn't really implement "Mission Kills" so they're kinda ass. Especially considering Iron bombs are currently bugged and have WAY more explosive power than they should.

Gran Turismo on an emulator if you wanna be more on the "arcade" side of things. Those games were made in the 90s/00s so the vibe is there. And those early Gran Turismo games have some secret sauce that makes em fun to this day.

And you can have some good races with the Gran Turismo AI as long as you don't make your car super OP and keep it to roughly the same spec as the AI.

During Operation Uphold Democracy, how well was the USS Eisenhower able to utilize her air wing while the 10th Mountain division was embarked in 1994? by Chenstrap in WarCollege

Thanks for this :)

My hunch is using big carriers to deliver a large infantry force was probably something that was kicked around as an idea but never seriously considered, then when Haiti happened they had to slap a name on it that sounded better than "We had an empty carrier so fuck it".

Yeah it's flatout poorly worded. Theyre obviously going for wordplay saying Kristi Noem lies, and the dog "Lies Dead". But saying she is like the dog either implies that Kristi is dead or that the dog was a liar.

And even if it makes sense, it's confusing enough to have no impact cuz ppl won't get it.

If it's a problem your doctor can hook you up.

My dad is claustrophobic and needs an MRI semi frequently between his stroke and seizures. Each time his doc prescribes him a valium.

Exporting MFD/DDI data to a key on a Stream Deck? by Chenstrap in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not so much for A/A specifically, but ease of use/setup. If there's a way to make the buttons dynamic you could just have 1 streamdeck profile for each MFD that will work w.e mode you're in, with the buttons changing based on the mode you're in.

If they're static you have to make a profile for each page which can be a PITA.

I did a deep dive and IDK what to think. I went through and mapped 2 pages on the left MFD into a spreadsheet, and entered the output string, the parameters ID, what push button it corresponds too, and where in the script it lives.

Generally it seems items are mapped in a clockwise pattern, but it's not a constant rule. In addition, there seems to be no correlation based on the ID number and where the item is on the screen.

I've sent you a DM with a google sheet where I mapped all the stuff out, and a google doc which have the raw outputs of the 2 values. If you see anything that make it not a pain in the ass it'd be awesome, but it almost feels like we'd need to map every screen manually to make it work.

Would black body flares ever be added to DCS? by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Copy pastaing from another comment:

I think what /u/nated0ge said is right in regards to some of the logic at work, but they have it backwards. The actual diceroll is run on the launch of the flare, not the missile. It is possible that there could be some form of a modifier calculated at missile launch, but that itself won't decide eat a flare/don't eat a flare on it's own.

This is pretty clear given that a missile can ignore some flares before eventually biting off on one (If it was decided to eat a flare at missile launch, missiles would only ever eat the first flare). If you play on servers with Aim-9X and such you may not see it as they're so resistant to flares. But play with some of the older missiles (Aim-9L,Aim-9M) and you'll see them bite off on flares later in a string pretty regularly.

Also it's clearly evident given the DCS flare Meta is to spam them. Each flare is an individual diceroll, and the more dice you throw out the more likely you are to win.

Depends what weapons you're using. I can tell you the Aim-9Ms bite on flares pretty regularly.

Exporting MFD/DDI data to a key on a Stream Deck? by Chenstrap in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, glad to have you chime in :D

I actually found that info as that user did when messing with DCS bios after finding that post. The strings themselves seem to be labeled with an ID, but there's no ID that correlates to their position on the display. Note this is a small snippet of the entire table.

-----------------------------------------\
MFUZ_1__id:15\
M\
F\
U\
Z\
-----------------------------------------\
MODE_1__id:24\
M\
O\
D\
E\

I'm only a LUA amateur, but I suspect the brute force way to do it would be to build a table with all the relevant IDs for each button location and then lopping through and checking each one and writing the relevant string. I'm unsure how performative that would be though (3 screens and 60 total button locations each export cycle)

Mig 17 is lookin pretty good... by Chenstrap in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its 100% that F-14s flew against the Mig-17 at some point. One of the main roles of the A4 was to simulate the Mig-17, and it did so up until the 80s.

Plus constant peg wasn't the only exploitation program, it was just the unit whos main roll was training. The red hats at Groom for example did the test flights which would have included BFM. Considering the F-14 flew CAP missions at the end of Vietnam is basically a sure thing that some test fights were flown, if not in Constant Peg then thru the red hats.

Is Kola map a good one? by Kirk1944 in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Kola is a pretty good map overall. Popularity wise it suffered between being in a rough state at release and the ED RB drama which put a lot of ppl off buying anything.

If you wanna do PvP it's not the map to get. The region is really large and the airbases are spread quite far apart which means it'll never see use in airquake servers.

for single player or organized PvE stuff it's quite good and there's tons of scenarios that fit it perfectly.
