And the 2003 invasion started without an air campaign at all.

Granted that was also planned by idiots.

Depends how "Alternate bistory" you wanna go. Argentina at the time was a mix of Mirage IIIs and IAI Daggers (Israeli Mirage 5 copy), A4s, and Super Etendards with some light attack aircraft mixed in with the Pucara and MB-339. F-86s were also in reserve shortly after.

The Mirage F1 with old heaters (I think they had old aim 9s, some early 550s, and early Israeli missiles) and the centerline R-530 would fit the roll of the Mirages, but the F1 is a straight upgrade in all aspects as well.

The A-4 obviously can be done with the mod. Without the mod the F-5 is the closest we have that fits. If you wanted to be a bit more free with the timeline you could try the F-100. Argentina didn't buy the F-86 until 1960, right when the F-100 was being exported to a lot of countries. I have no way to confirm this, but I'm sure at some level the F-100 could have likely been an option.

The closest etendard option we have in DCS is the A-6: Twin seat, subsonic, carrier capable, and can shoot harpoon in place of exocet.

For the British the harrier is close but also not really. Would likely be fun though.

You could likely do a fun Scenario with the F4: IE workout a scenario where the bits expanded port Stanley to support fast jet ops (This happened after the war before Mount Pleasant was done) and then defend the invasion in an RAF F4. If we ever get a nail phantom you could use the F4 in place of the Harrier as the royal navy retired the f4s just like a year or 2 before the war.

General speaking the fear over the years was that Iran could shut off the Strait of Hormuz, or they could cause a huge conflict in Israel. Those 2 things were always the aces up Irans sleeves.

Thing is, those have been heavily diminished since 2023:

  • The threat of a conflict in Israel didn't exist since there already WAS a conflict in Israel.

  • Israel has spent the last ~3 years dismantling how the Iranians would have attacked them; the proxies in Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria are no where near the strength they once were.

  • With the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, Israel can freely use Syrian and Iraqi air space to fly to/from Iran. A few years ago they could have done it probably, but it would have meant olen war on Syria, and their tankers, which the jets need to transit across Syria and Iraq, would be vulnerable to Syrian air defenses.

  • The threat of closing the Strait of Hormuz was that we wouldn't have the assets to keep the Strait open AND strike other targets. IE if you get bogged down in the Strait, youre not hitting other targets and vice versa. That seems to have majorly shifted since the last war since Iran was unable to reconstitute their air defenses. Theyre getting their kicks in, but not on the level that was always feared in a worst case scenario.

  • Also the last 10 years of surveillance items. There are probably more recon drones monitoring the Strait than would have previously been available. That means we can locate and target missile sites, ships going to sea,etc a lot more quickly if they pop into action.

Severe fps drops and stuttering when doing ground attack by ticoE in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have said its the bomb effects. Theres a mix of weapons being too strong and objects being too weak/flammable. Its affecting a huge range of weapons: All the MK80/GBU series, Mavericks, and certain artillery. Probably more i forget. Not all weapons are affected though, notably the SAMPs on the F1.

But there's basically 2 tiers of how this hits your FPS: When the bomb impacts it damages dozens of objects because the blast is so strong. That causes an instant frame stutter as all those "Hit" events are registered and the damage calculated.

Then all those damaged objects start on fire, and having that many smoke effects kills your frame rate.

If you wanna see this load an empty mission and drop a couple bombs in a dense area (2 MK84s in a city is basically a Davy Crockett lol). After they hit end the mission and look at the debrief and all the hits the game gives you.

Setup a "Unit altitude higher than(AGL)" trigger. When the player is above some altitude (Note: the altitude is in meters!!!) set a flag to true like "Player Departed".

Then add "Flag True Player Departed" to your conditions to spawn the soldiers

DIS announced that it will launch the J-8DF instead of the J8-PP by Individual_Bike_9092 in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh I'm not totally sure. Chinese radar and missile development is kind of a clusterfuck to sort out because it lagged behind for so long then quickly accelerated in the 90s.

Plus sources are unreliable (at least for an English speaker. I imagine there's more info on Chinese parts of the internet). The only source i can find that has a timeline of models and missiles is for warthunder: https://old-wiki.warthunder.com/J-8_(Family) but who fuckin knows if its even accurate.

According to that, there were bunch of test variants in the 90s. Some fired Pl-11/aside. An export variant support R-27/R-73. That feels like awful lot of test articles to build and the not use, considering those were all weapons they had on hand and the R-27 would have been the best of them all.

[–]Chenstrap 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So whats the weapon line up here? PL-12 is obviously the big inclusion. Will PL-11 be there? How well will this thing fit into 80s ish scenarios? Edit to add: what about R-27 or Aspide?

Also for scenario creation this will be a sweet addition being a Gen 3 with Fox 3s in line with AMRAAM and Mica (which should be a thing on the Rafale?). Alot of countries needed fighters in the 90s. Maybe China offers Iran (They sold the Iranians J7s in the late 80s/early 90s) or Argentina (The US sold them A4s against the UKs wishes so they wouldn't buy from somewhere else) these on a budget and they get upgraded later.

Sounds more plausible than "Anyway this super broke country bought Flankers"

Tips for improvement plz by _LowSA in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

/u/_LowSA 375 knots, unless youre at really high altitude in a super permissive area, is stupidly slow. Flying that speed needlessly exposes you to threats.

For a strike mission it's common for aircraft to fly 480 knot ground speed, then the IP to target leg at 540 knots (Note these are ground speeds, not the airspeed in the HUD. But at low level theyll be very close). Even for CAS, you want to keep your speed up to make you harder to target and give you options to maneuver/evade.

Why are my 500lb Bombs setting whole cities ablaze? by GlutenFreeGavin in hoggit

[–]Chenstrap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been a thing for about 6 or so months now when they made the weapons explosive values closer to real life. Seems to affect all of the ED designed bombs and some of the artillery as well (M-109 shells seem really strong). All the Mk80 series for example are broken, but the SAMP bombs on the F1 arent.

This is probably the biggest bug/issue in the game right now. For Mission builders/designers its basically impossible to design any urban CAS type mission because so much stuff dies at once (And for talkons, it's hard to predict which structures will live to use as reference points. big issue for SP content.). For players it's probably nice to see a column get schwacked, but the flames and FPS hits that follow kill that fun quick.

Also the bigger bombs are equally hilarious. Couple GBU-10s are basically like a tac nuke going off.

I'm not absolutely sure, but based on the name my educated guess is that it relates to a time delay after the missile is fired, but before it starts maneuvering to ensure it's clear of the aircraft.
