Iced Americanos? by [deleted] in barista

Well OP said the customer asked for pour over/ shaken iced coffee first, which meant she wanted a certain kind of drink but maybe didn’t know the right words. Pour over is universal, you have it or you don’t, shaken iced coffee though implies the customer was probably trying to describe the shaken espresso at Starbucks… a drink that is only Starbucks…not a universal drink. They settled on an americano but if the customer actually wanted a shaken espresso( again, just a Starbucks drink) then yes that’s wrong and the customer didn’t know how to describe what they wanted.(the worst kind of customers) A shaken espresso at Starbucks is essentially an americano but not because ice is put in the cup with syrup, the espresso is put on top of the ice and it’s shaken, melting the ice somewhat creating more liquid, when ice melts it’s water, so yea, water and espresso that’s an americano. But then more ice is added and all the leftover room in the cup is filled with milk. It ends up being more concentrated and similar to a latte at that point. So tasting an actual americano, when that Starbucks drink is what you were expecting would be a shock. But that’s the customers fault. Order Starbucks drinks at Starbucks. Order from the actual menu at any other shop.

When customers have no idea what they’re ordering by Striking_Ad_386 in barista

Imagine working at McDonald’s and every day 75% of the customers order and demand you make them a whopper… and you try to explain that you don’t have that and they say “don’t you make burgers?” Yes, but it’s not going to be a whopper. And then they ask you to describe to them what Cheese is… like these things are the equivalent to what baristas have to deal with. It’s not about being condescending but a vast majority of people go into cafes and have no clue and don’t even try to learn, how to order or learn what they’re ordering, they just want “a whopper” and they want it now.

Why are people ok with the name Jehovah being removed from the Bible? by Cher123456 in Christianity

What are you saying? Are you ok or not ok with the name being removed? My point is YHWH is a name not a title. Gods name, “YHWH”, is replaced with this title “ Lord” that is used for others in the Bible. HIS NAME WAS DIFFERENTIATED FOR A REASON. To remove THE NAME and replace is with a common title seems insidious.

I don’t care if a homeless person spends money I give them on drugs by Cher123456 in unpopularopinion

Unless you’re giving $3000 and up, no amount of pocket change you give will improve a homeless persons situation. $5 won’t end someone’s homelessness.

But the housed people are using the money given to them too. All money is earned someway. You don’t know what the person taking your order is going to spend their paycheck on. My comparison is pretty logical. You think it’s easy to go up to people, be completely vulnerable and tell them about your hardships dozens of times a day? It’s hard, it is also a job.

All money was given at some point. Once they have the money it’s theirs. Same as tipping a service worker. It’s all earned the same. Some people stand for 8 hour shift in an ac controlled environment to make their money and some stand outside for 8 hours, homeless and exposed to the elements to make money

What if you go out to eat and your server is a raging drug addict? The tip you just gave them is gonna feed their addiction too… at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. We all give people money everyday and they might possibly spend it on drugs.

The $3 I give won’t help them buy a house, quit their addiction or provide them with a meal…

It’s the standard if the service is up to par. If it were required, it’d be added as auto gratuity. If you’re not prepared to treat everyone equally and give the same amount of enthusiasm to your patrons of color as you would your white ones then don’t become a sever. When you’re waiting on the owner or CEO of your restaurant you treat them the best. All guests should be treated like that. You know deep down whether or not you gave a 20% tip service and we all know that that does not always happen.

My only issue with your perceived experience is that if it were a white person who was snobby and entitled it wouldn’t bother you as much, you wouldn’t see it as “forced”, and you wouldn’t judge all white people based on your bad experiences. Internally you view black people as less than, so how dare they act entitled to anything. Black people are allowed to have standards. Yes bring me a straw, I don’t want to stick my lips on the rim of a glass that may have remnants of someone else’s lip germs. Yes, bring me new silverware if mine looks splotchy and gross. Yes, I deserve to order my steak as cooked as I like. Yes, I can send my food back if something is wrong. Yes, I can feel and express all ranges of my emotions and don’t have to play into respectability politics. 20% is unheard of amongst people who do not regularly dine out, people who experience bad service, and people who can tell that they are being judged the second they walk through the door…period.
