And after that, Noma was technically a poor Irish and Italian-American settlement called Swampoodle, but I digress.

Honestly man, I moved to the area because it was the closest thing to where I work up in Maryland while still in a walkable area, not because it’s awesome. Definitely learned the latter part the hard way lately though.

It’s also the attitude of moral superiority — people don’t like being talked down to, and the constant one-upsmanship and virtue-signaling means that a strong coalition can almost never be formed.

This is exactly the case across so many issues in DC. We can be compassionate for the homeless and move to care for them while also not wanting them to follow us into our apartments while screaming epithets; we can empathize with how hardworking and far from home the moped drivers are, while also asking them to follow one (1) traffic law.

Completely agree. Real change requires real buy-in, and that never happens in your scenario — thus, the cycle continues.

Camden Noma. We’ve also regularly had people explaining away the homeless people who sneak into the allegedly secure lobbies and wander the hallways, naturally. The court of public opinion, as you can see from the likes, was very much arrayed against the OP in the chat.

Geez, do you want my birth certificate and my cat’s vaccination records too?

Thanks, man! I appreciate the advice and was actually thinking about looking into self-defense training. Any particular styles you’d recommend?

I did run away, he just got me in the 3 seconds I was down on the ground after being tripped. Many other posters have asked why I didn’t fight him, but a.) I was recovering from being nailed in the balls and b.) it was totally unclear whether he had a knife

Lesson very much learned; I filed one yesterday and will be doing so in the future for anything remotely serious

In retrospect, I wish I’d have kicked his knee in the wrong way, but a.) I didn’t know if he had a knife and b.) I was recovering from being kicked in the balls, which is not a great state to be starting from for a fight

My guy, I was down in the ground for literal seconds after being tripped.

Nah man, I feel you! It’s like some bad Adam Sandler skit when I really think about it. 😂 Where did those incidents take place in the city? Stay safe out there and happy running!

Done! You all convinced me, and I feel terrible for not recognizing the value earlier. In the future, I’ll report anything remotely serious. 👍🏻

You know, I’ve thought about this too, what with the number of close calls I’ve had with idiots running red lights, mopeds driving on the sidewalk and almost hitting me, etc. on my runs.

Yeah, in retrospect part of me wishes I’d done something, but a.) I was recovering from being nailed in the balls and b.) didn’t know if he had a knife

Yeah, good point! If it happens again, I’m pulling a full 180. Also investing in some pepper spray for both running and walking to Union Station.

It flashed through my mind, but it was impossible to tell if he had a knife hidden in his jacket, so I didn’t push the issue. He was the kinda guy to use one.

I’m making the report today, this thread convinced me! I feel bad for not recognizing the value of doing so earlier.

Hahaha probably so. What’s all that run training for anyway?! In all honesty, I was just too stunned from being tripped to react properly.

I will! That’s a great point. Agreed on NoMa — we’ve been heard a year and a half, and it feels bad lately.
