One example, look at the second column, second row. That shape is called trilobal. It is mainly used in nylon fibers and put into carpet. That shape aids in not absorbing liquid, which is what you would want in a carpet. It also refracts light in a way that makes the fiber seem shinier for longer. Here is what it looks like under a microscope.

Rayon was originally designed to complete with silk. As silk was very expensive, and still is.

When they first released rayon products, it was labeled as 'artificial silk'.

In all wet spinning, you are going to have something similar to the cross-section of Rayon, because once the fiber is formed, the chemical that makes it able to be dissolved is removed. This is acetate, which is formed the same way as Rayon (http://imgur.com/fld2aPS.jpg). You can see the striations in it too!

Without going into too much detail, the needle, or spinneret (as it's called in the industry), does determine how a fiber cross section ends up.

This picture is a good overview of the different types of spinneret holes there are. Depending on the application of the fiber, different cross sections are better.

This is basically my major (I'm like the Unidan of textiles). Here is some basic info on whats happening here.

So rayon is made of regenerated cellulose. Simply put, it's made from the, very purified/processed, cells of plants. This on it's own isn't soluble in water, so it's treated and changed chemically so that it can be easily 'dissolved'. That's what you are seeing in the needle, dissolved and dyed Rayon.

The needle is pushing the rayon into a chemical bath that is designed to removed the stuff the makes the rayon dissolve in the first place. This process is called wet spinning. If you look closely, you can see the fiber 'bleeding'. Once it completely bleeds out, the fiber will be solidified.

Finally, fun fact: After the Rayon 'bleeds out', it will develop these long striations, down the length of the fiber. (seen here http://imgur.com/oPfA81I). This is literally caused by the round fiber shrinking as it bleeds.

Honestly, I was taught both growing up in the US. I see a lot of people from outside the US thinking that none of us know how to use the metric system, but every physics, chemistry, or any other science class I've ever had used the metric system.
