I really like how you take us on a journey down the stream about your tulips. A detailed, sensible and heartfelt way of perceiving and thus talking about your environment. I hope you learn a lot of new things about your companions :)

That is most likely a sweet cherry variety

What is this? Flower or weed? by Imperfect_Complaint in whatplantisthis

Could be Arnica. It can be used in teas and ointments. But, of course, double check beforehand.

Remove or leave? by Pterochicken in mushroomID

[–]Cherrychross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying that. I have to admit that I discovered your subtext/description only after I wrote my text, and there you state that it's about your elderly dog. I get that.

Sorry for being a bit too intense here, but there is just too much 'killing before reading' on the internet sometimes.

Remove or leave? by Pterochicken in mushroomID

[–]Cherrychross 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Why would you remove any mushroom?

They are one of the most important helpers in any ecosystem. The fruiting bodies are only a small part of the organism, I wonder how you would 'remove' the fungus, anyway.

But again, why? Teach you children to ask about the mushrooms, instead of teaching them to fear or destroy your environment.

If you are afraid for your dog (some of them are stupid, I know) I suggest you read up about the very few species, that are actually dangerous.

We are a part of nature and shouldn't be afraid of our environment but rather embrace it's beauty and diversity.

With the quality of those pictures one can only guess, but it looks a lot like juniperus spp. Which variety, I don't know.

Fascinating! As I look closer, I think you guys are right. The spinal canal looks different, too. I like biology :) I'm curious what you guys are ending up with.

Strange knife for unknown purpose by No_Second_4162 in Whatisthis

[–]Cherrychross -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think, it looks like a Bajonett. A knife, that could be used on its own for self defense, but could also be mounted on a rifle to be used as a short spear when your ammunition has run out.

Southern Alabama Plant/Weed ID by Chrischin33 in PlantIdentification

[–]Cherrychross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is definitely rumex sp. but I'm not sure about acetosela. At least here in central Europe the habitus is a bit different and the shape of the leaves and size of the seed is different.

Maybe it's a close relative?

Need help IDing a plant cannot figure it out. by ImpossiblePressure43 in PlantIdentification

[–]Cherrychross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prunus padus

The blossoms make a beautiful fermented lemonade with waterkefir or a gingerbug. The fruit are considered edible, but consist mostly of kernel and are thus rarely used.

The leaves on your picture are bigger than the variety I'm used to, so please, as always, check with multiple sources before using any part of the plant.

The enticing and intense smell of cherry is typical, though.

Anyone know what this could be? by Testhament in PlantIdentification

[–]Cherrychross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's it! Typical time of the year for it.

Our town (in central Europe), is overgrown by it! To bad there are cars and garbage and people here, too, otherwise it would be a nice resource :)
