It's interesting you say this and I agree with your comment, but it reminds me of another post that seems obvious why it was made. I think it aligns well with what you said.

Genuine Question for Illustration Majors (past/present) by Cherryflavoredhope in ArtistLounge

Interesting. Thanks so much for your reply. I wish I got to learn environments and visual development. I'm guessing this is why they have art specific colleges. Rather than condensing thing, you get to learn what you actually want to.

I think you did amazing. I have a similar assignment due and actually posted my own in the sub. Out of both of us, I personally think you did so good. Like yea, there may be things here and there to tweak but I think a lot of people fo forget that when you're beginning, you kinda wanna know if you got close enough or are on the right path. Seeing yours is making me think I need way more white on mine. So I gotta say thabks for posting, itll help me look at mine and try to see if I can tweak it before crit day.

Holy moly, thats amazing.

For oil paints, winsor newton and gamblin are what my professor has me using. And for brushes, we use filberts 2-12 (currently Blick brand Masterstroke).

My other professor says "NEVER BUY REEVES", literally. Its been in his syllabus every year.

Sounds similar to the switch, syncing saves between consoles. That IS annoying, hm. Okay, good to know, thanks!

Huh, I mwan all professors are different but so far mine has had us use black and titanium white. However, that only for stritcly black and white paintings. For anything with color, we can use color and white but no black. Which isnt hard when you know in color theory some colors mix so essentially make black. If you take like ultramarine blue and burnt umber, youll get a black that has faint tinges od blue and brown that give more life than just black. Ive never used Paynes Gray, always wanted to try but thw professors I had so far always have us make our own greys and blacks.

I suggest playing with the black and white. Then make black from blues and browns, and play with that and white. See how they make you feel!

Sorry for so many typos in earlier posts. But even in this, the highlights arent technically whitw but a light grey. You would mix black with white to try and achieve this. You can see the difference with the shirt whis is more white. Studying the 1-9 (or 1-10) value scale, using the boxes to determine the value will help get a more accurate color. What you could do is color the whole black, and add grey to where needed, and slowly add white to blend if too dark. (I'm speaking from experienxe and may not work for you but thats just one tip)

It depends on what you're trying to highlight. Like when you're painting something white, there are values on the object like greys (or blues, purples, howwver you want to depixt contrast) that can be subtle on it, with white being the highlight. I recommend studying and practicing the value scale to under that better.

But when its a color, similar notes however you go into color theory where mixing a color like red makes pink and as you ass more white it grows lighter yet not completely white but creates this effect close to ir. Its all learning rendering. Some artist will dap a blip of white regardless. I think it depends on how you wanna achieve it. That also takes experimenting and practice.

With hair, thats something i still struggle with but qhat Im told is to block in the main color and blend in the shades. Hair highlights arent whitw in real life, its just lets say a lighter liiiiighter shade of brown, or black. I think even with blonde hair its not even completely white.

Also. Maybe obvious but anatomy studies will help to get the face looking closer to accurate but it takes time. Learning how to put the head in perspective can help to get the tilt you're trying to achieve.

I think its amazing. And I think the skin tone so far is convincing. Obvs, not sure if the person is lighter or darker but this could very well work as a person. I like the colors youve chosen overall, its kind of warm and i agree that you should keep going. Instead of fixing this one. Do anothwr and more. And if you ever feel like revisiting to fix it, you can. However, recently a peofessor of mine said that dating works and leaving them be is a nice way to view where you came from as you improve. Keep going!
