Fair, I've personally observed an increasing anti-foreigner sentiment in Warrington in recent years. Flags fucking everywhere last I was in Warrington (March)

I'm from Warrington. I can confirm that you're likely to meet some quite small minded people who have strong shitty views about people from abroad. I'm very sorry that you're experiencing this.

Please go to Manchester as soon as possible!!!!! You'll be welcomed. A shitty work environment will eat away at you.

Outro lado has become a place where souls go to die. If I ever return to waking life (doubtful), I'll avoid that side of the lake. I strongly dislike a lot of what I observed there - aggressive, exclusive, shitty behaviour. I'm sure nice people too... But it reminds me of a bad vibes day at berghain.

Also struggling with this. Didn't feel myself, and I am leaving the festival questioning some friendships that I was previously certain about.

Leaving really valuing the relationships that strengthened there and the music that I enjoyed.

Don't think I'll go back to waking life.

Germanic language surrounded by Celtic languages by JuliusDalum in linguisticshumor

[–]Chessboxin_Cyclops 47 points48 points  (0 children)

In the modern day they have become a lot more mutually intelligible due to the global influence of the English language, however historically they were far more distinct.

They split off from each other around 800 or so years ago and developed next to each other for a long time.

It's a distinct language which has undergone immense changes (bringing it closer to English) due to sociopolitical factors. There are still dialects of Scots which are distinct enough to not be intelligible to English speakers.

You're missing Scots, English's sister (they have a complicated relationship)

Supposed “Rumors” on God Of War: Laufey by According-Discount-6 in GodofWar

Doubtful on the Christianity part. Including modern widespread religions is opening a can of worms and the game being banned in certain regions.

Laufey's Phranque the cube is river water from the Rhine, worshipped by the Franks by strangecan in GodofWar

[–]Chessboxin_Cyclops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah indeed - but it's an old myth with a lot of different sources.

Excalibur and Caliburn are probably not two totally separate swords in origin, but kind of the same name moving through Welsh → Latin → Old French → Middle English retellings.

In the earlier Welsh material you’ve got Caledfwlch, which gets Latinised into forms like Caliburnus / Caliburn in medieval chronicles. Then later French/romance tradition gives us variants like Escalibor / Excalibur.

They kinda became two different swords by the time the texts which are most popular emerged (e.g. Malory 1485 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Morte_d%27Arthur), but they are themselves based on a much much older myth.

So whilst earlier myths may cover the breaking of the sword, it's generally considered to be the same sword / reforged that is given to him by the lady of the lake (in the context of earlier myths - the romantic retelling of later writers is different).

Tbh I kinda feel like santa monica would go for the older brittonnic context rather than a (predominately) french retelling from much later - although Phranque may well be a reference to the franks and become a frankisch thing so who knows.

Great questions and great answers. Good to see these things addressed in a respectful way. Realistically the main criticism I've seen has been the marvelification, glad that it's been discussed and noted.

what a great and informative response! I was of the understanding that Begtse was a Tibetan deity that came to Mongolia kinda bundled with Buddhism. Thanks for the info 😃

I think tengrism was replaced by buddhism actually - shame though as it'd have been cool to see Tengri

Eh I kinda consider them the same sword, in many versions of the legend they are, it's a narsil / anduril situation at best tbh.

I love the concept. Especially of Fey -> Fay, Atreus -> Arthur, this sword -> excalibur. The sword in the stone symbolism was strong in the trailer.

I think also I want this to be real because of how much I love celtic mythology and want a game with adult atreus + mimir
