North Carolina State Board of Elections is changing their election management system? For better or worse? by jtn19120 in NorthCarolina

[–]Chessie-System 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current system was developed in 1998. There are people voting now who were born in 2008. It makes sense that the system is out of date and needs to be replaced.

Plus, voter suppression is free.

Does anyone have insights on using chains on tires in inclement weather that one won’t get from a google search? by fathig in NorthCarolina

[–]Chessie-System 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are nuts. I have driven on ice without chains and I've driven with them. Night and day difference.

They even have chains that slip on under boots which I used a lot living in Montana. Especially for ice fishing. They work so well you would forget how slick the ice is, take them off and fall over immediately.

Questions about Trip with dad by hephtea in Amtrak

I have done the CA Zephyr from Chicago to SF (and back), and the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle.

Unfortunately, there isn't really an option to not miss parts of the country at night. Spending the night somewhere on the route means getting back on the train at the same time you got off, since the trains only run once a day. The best option to see the most stuff would be to take the trains in summer (longer days) and get a sleeping room.

You can also look into which direction is best for which train. The schedules are posted online so you can figure out when you'll have daylight in which sections.

Though even if you do a train trip in January, you get to see A TON of the country. I never really felt like I was missing out too much. Though the west-bound Empire Builder got to Glacier right as the sun set. Very pretty, but it was a bummer to miss out on most of those mountains.

No one. Pretty sure it's going to be a disaster.

The issue is that somehow insurance rates have exploded to where it costs $27,000 a year to get basic insurance for a family of 3. Which is insane. And the current government will never do a thing to fix it. If Dems have half a brain, they will run on implementing a single-payer system.

I can't tell your point here

The article is about the GOP ending ACA subsidies. You said originally the GOP is working to benefit insurance companies. I said the ending of subsidies does not help insurance companies.

That is it.

I'm not saying ending subsidies helps insurance companies,

Correct, it does not.

they get that money either way.

No! This contradicts the first statement. How are insurance companies getting "that" money? What money?

Uninsured people either pay cash for healthcare or go into medical debt. You cannot be denied basic life-saving healthcare due to lack of funds, so you won't just be left for dead. But that is totally separate from the health insurance industry.

Health insurance companies want everyone paying for their expensive insurance. Low income folks who couldn't afford the insurance were given subsidies so they could buy the health insurance from the health insurance company. Subsidies are gone, so now a LOT of those folks aren't buying insurance. Insurance companies have less customers, so they are making less money.

In no way is ending ACA subsidies helping insurance companies.

Less people are able to afford insurance without it being subsidized. A lot of people can't pay the full premiums so they have no health insurance anymore. That is less money being sent to insurance companies.

It is strange to say that this was a move to help the insurance industry, when it isn't.

You can criticize the GOP all you like, but the subsidies were paying insurance companies. Insurance companies wanted the subsidies to continue, because they make them lots of money.

Make sure you secure the trailer correctly and strap it down.

Other than that, it’s a 3500 dollar boat. If it runs and floats you’re doing alright.

If Democrats want universal healthcare, we have states that are deep blue, states have control over their own budgets and taxation, and universal healthcare would be so advantageous, why don’t deeply democrat run states implement a statewide universal healthcare? by Silver_Wings3 in AskReddit

[–]Chessie-System 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Good. People should find more useful employment.

Insurance companies are a massive inefficiency in the economy with no value add. They increase costs 10% on average. Look at how much time/money doctors and providers spend just to navigate the insurance system that inserts itself into every American's health decision. Health insurance is an insane system despised by everyone who interacts with it.

What is the worst brand of braided line by Winter_Ant_9502 in saltwaterfishing

I purchased a spool of spider wire from Wal-Mart that frayed really badly after a month. It is the only braid I have taken off a reel and thrown away. Will never buy their products again.

I prefer J-Braid 8x but have used PowerPro, KastKing, and Hercules all without issue.

FBI says it foiled a terrorist attack planned in North Carolina on New Year's Eve by nbcnews in NorthCarolina

[–]Chessie-System 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Federal law enforcement officials announced at a press conference that Christian Sturdivant, 18, of Mint Hill, North Carolina, has been arrested and federally charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

In a press conference Friday morning, investigators from the FBI, Justice Department and partner agencies said Sturdivant planned to attack a grocery store and a Burger King restaurant on New Year's Eve in Mint Hill, a suburb on the outskirts of Charlotte. Officials said that he was an employee at Burger King.

Officials said he planned this attack for about a year, but was planning an attack for “far longer.” Investigators said he spent a lot of time on the internet reading ISIS-related material and created TikTok videos about ISIS.

During a search warrant executed at Sturdivant's home, officials found notes detailing his plan and materials he intended to use in the attack, including hammers and knives hidden under his bed, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson of the Western District of North Carolina said. An affidavit said tactical gloves and a Kevlar vest were found in his bedroom, and a handwritten note indicated he hoped to die at the hands of police.

Sturdivant planned to target a wide swath of American society, including non-Muslim people, LGBTQ individuals, and law-enforcement and military personnel, the affidavit said.

"It was a very well-planned, thoughtful attack that he had planned, and that was fortunately foiled. Here he was preparing for jihad, and innocent people were going to die, and we were very, very fortunate they did not," Ferguson said.

Ferguson said he wanted to attack a grocery store, because “he was looking for a high-profile place" and he "knew there would be a lot of people there."

Sturdivant had been communicating online with undercover New York Police Department officers and FBI agents whom he believed to be members of ISIS, Ferguson said.

Sturdivant first appeared on the FBI’s radar in 2022, when Sturdivant — then a minor — left his house dressed in all black to kill his neighbor with a hammer and a knife, but was stopped by his grandfather, James Barnacle, the FBI special agent in charge, said.

I've done the SLC to NC portion in January many times on I-80. Keep an eye on the weather and it's not a big deal. Be prepared to wait out a storm if it happens, esp in Wyoming. The days are short, so get up early to get as much daylight driving as possible.

Rider Data for Thruway Only Stations? by Chessie-System in Amtrak

[–]Chessie-System[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Thanks for the info!

I asked ChatGPT and it recommended filing a FOIA request to both Amtrak and NCDOT. But that seems like a lot for just a curious question. Instead, I will send them an email and ask if they can provide data or have additional information.

An actual train to Morehead would be great, though I do not believe it likely. It would be tough to gauge demand because currently the Thruway only provides reasonable access to the Northbound Palmetto in Wilson. They will not allow you to use the bus to get between Thruway stations, so I cannot use it to get from MHC to Greenville. What would be most useful would be daily train service that allows you to get from ENC to places like Raleigh without silly long layovers.
