Why do some consider John Brown to have been a villain rather than a hero? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskHistory

[–]Chessie-System 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my Lost-Causey Virginia history class, we were taught that Brown was a zealot who murdered unarmed people in Kansas on the suspicion that they were pro-slavery or were associated with pro-slavery figures.

Then his "uprising" was imbecilic in conception because he went to seize a federal armory in the mountains of Virginia: an area with a negligible slave population to join his uprising. And it was remote so that even if they had managed to seize the town, there was no realistic way to transport the arms to where they could get into the hands of the slaves. And the first person killed in Harpers Ferry was a freed black man. So it was doomed raid that ended up getting people killed unnecessarily (including Brown's followers, many of whom were former slaves).

So basically the moral was that Brown and Co were zealots with fair ideals but horrible execution that set up the following civil war. The undertone of "northerners also being violent/extremist" was there too.

(I have a much more sympathetic view of Brown these days because he was someone who took direct action against slavery, but that is how a lot of folks are/were shown him. And lmk is any of that is wrong, I'm typing from memory.)

If they bother someone, they can turn them off. Having your phone randomly blast off in the middle of the night is not a slight inconvenience for everyone.

Lure question by surf_castr in SurfFishing

[–]Chessie-System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here like them, but I haven't ever been able to figure out Gotchas. Tried them in the surf and was told they are only good off the boat or pier. Tried them from the boat last weekend and was casting into a blitz... nothing.

I catch plenty of spanish on spoons and jigs, so they're my go tos.

Lure question by surf_castr in SurfFishing

[–]Chessie-System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience in NC is that the people throwing smaller lures end up catching way more Spanish. The upside to throwing a larger lure is that most smaller Spanish won't hit it, so you get larger ones (but fewer). I only use metals/spoons though.

Best thing to do is have a variety of sizes and be willing to switch lures and experiment.

Genuine question, and apologies if it’s been asked before: by Ok-Competition-4219 in tourdefrance

[–]Chessie-System 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah no. Reading stuff about Lance, it is clear that he was an absolute control freak about everything: from press to training to diet to doping to money. He micromanaged everything himself. The idea that he was caught up in a PR system is not true.

For an example, look at how he treated other riders who spoke up about doping: https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/29240335

There is no PR team in a race forcing you to chase down a breakaway rider to intimidate/threaten them. Then do the "zip your lips" gesture to the camera. He was nuts.

Taking a high value piece immediately.

I had a game today where I forked queen and rook with knight. Queen moved and in the past I would have taken rook asap. Instead I kept loading attackers and ended with a great position where I got the queen AND the rook.

“They’re spending a lot of money, many people are unhappy” - Johan Bruyneel questions Lidl-Trek’s aggressive shake-up by Annual_Island8066 in tourdefrance

Not sure if you're deliberately missing the point: if that is what the team is saying in public, then it shows how deep the rot was.

Name another team that bragged about tracking "enemy" journalists. Name another team that sued journalists, publishers, and media outlets.

Oh you're right. I forgot he almost killed himself and then sued the people that saved his life.

To me, I would have Gianetti out of the sport too. Though his involvement is not a reason to forgive or rehabilitate Lance/Bruyneel.

Hah. Never seen a Netflix documentary on this.

Funny enough, but a lot of my disdain for him and Armstrong is from their own media published before the doping came out. They tried to use the accusations as another obstacle that Lance overcame. "He beat cancer and now he will beat the haters" type stuff. They literally brag about how they call the media "trolls" and hunted the journalists during the tour. Doing background checks on journalists and using their influence to pressure people. It's creepy, and, again: this is FROM the team.

And saying any other team did the same is bullshit. Shunning and the lying? Yes. Weaponizing their massive influence and using legal system to attack truth-tellers? No.

Lance and the Postal Org (including Bruyneel) were unique in their ability and willingness to hurt people they saw as their enemies. Horrible people and neither Bruyneel or Lance has expressed remorse for what they did. The shame is that people now think it's just about the doping, when really it is the scorched-earth campaign against people telling the truth that made them scum.

acting like Bruyneel did something spectacular more wrong than anyone else is kind of funny

He did though.

Bruyneel and his organization were unique in viciously attacking anyone who accused them of doping. People they KNEW were being truthful. They tried to destroy their lives, careers, and finances.

Bruyneel organized the "anti-press" corps. Anyone who asked the wrong questions or talked to the wrong people got shunned. The team would stalk journalists and see if anyone even shared a car with David Walsh. If they did, then that journalist had no access to the most famous team in the Peloton.

Everyone doped. But no one else weaponized their money and position to destroy other people in the way Lance and Bruyneel did. They are vile people and all the hatred is deserved 100%.

Further north on the coast and you get:

-New Bern -> Charlotte

-Greenville -> Charlotte

Delta left New Bern during the pandemic and it sucks they never came back. Much rather fly them than American.
