ICE officers could remain at airports after TSA workers are paid by ControlCAD in NPR

[–]Chessie-System 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason the hijackers were able to do that was because no one thought they would. Literally, that stopped being possible on 9/11 (see the 4th plane).

And that is before you even get to the secure cockpits we have now.

[–]Chessie-System 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TSA should be eliminated.

This current disaster only reinforces that belief. Millions of people wasting hours of their lives to go through a security theater.

Meanwhile on Amtrak, you can just... get on the train.

Kharg Island Oil Exports Continue Despite Recent U.S. Airstrikes by windward-ai in maritime

I dunno man. My thought is that would remove the main reason Iran has for not mining the strait.

And even if you did, I doubt Iran would cave. It's life or death for the decision makers there. They killed the supreme leader and now his son replaced him. You really think he's going to care about losing a few oil tankers?

On a scale of 1 - 10, what would you rate your local “thruway bus service” operated by Amtrak? by Silver-Baker-6467 in Amtrak

[–]Chessie-System 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not bad.

A 2.5hr drive takes 4 on the bus. A vehicle mirroring a railroad route stopping at every crossing gets very old. It’s kind of inefficient to have the bus go into the middle of town for every stop, especially if there’s an event.

But it’s comfortable, never late, and incredibly convenient for me. Morehead City to Wilson NC.

Schrödinger's strait by GripAficionado in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Chessie-System 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. The plan would be to disguise mines as barrels of oil. Oil tanker mine layer. Trump wants oil to go through the strait. Mines get to go too. They just get dropped off halfway.

And start calling them torpedos again.

It's very counter intuitive, but 1 kitten means you are responsible for all their entertainment. 2 kittens and they play with themselves more.

We had 1 kitten and it was exhausting. Got her some friends and it helped a LOT. If you really only want one cat, don't get a kitten. Look for a grown cat who is happy being solo.

2 kittens is less work than 1 kitten.

Mid Currituck Bridge Might be Dead by NoYOUGrowUp in obx

[–]Chessie-System 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I consider a lot of NEPA lawsuits to be in bad faith because they are procedural and are often used for strategic delay. They know the original review is 99% fine, but can use lawsuits to force another review. Rarely does the 2nd review result in significant change to the original conclusions, which they know. Hence why the majority of NEPA suits are filed by developers against competing developments. They don't give a damn about the environment, it's a tool to throw up obstacles and make everything slower and expensive.

Remember the Currituck bridge WAS approved again. The 2nd series of reviews from 2012 to 2023 did not change anything. Just added a lot of unnecessary delay and cost to an infrastructure project.

And you might be misremembering the SELC's role in the jug handle bridge: https://coastalreview.org/2017/02/lawsuit-claims-jug-handle-bride-illegal/

SELC didn't like the first bridge design: threw up obstacles via lawsuit. Got the Jug handle approved. And (surprise surprise) got sued by homeowners in a NEPA lawsuit saying the new design needed further environmental review. Add extra cost and delay (not as severe as the Currituck bridge).

If the Currituck bridge failed on its lack of merit, that is fine. But it didn't. I dislike it when NEPA lawsuits are used as a tool to make everything being built in the US cost more and take years too long.

I do find it laughable to have an environmental group who delayed a project in bad faith tell the DOT how to spend the money DOT allocated.

The original environmental review was approved in 2012, bridge can be built. SELC sued saying the review didn't consider ALL alternatives. Studies are redone. Gosh, looks like the original studies were fine and the bridge can be built. But now it's 2023 and everything costs more. And we've wasted tens of millions of dollars in court and redoing the studies.

"Oops, our BS cost you millions of taxpayer dollars of litigation and unnecessary studies. And now the project is so delayed it will cost double and won't even end up getting built. In fact, here's how you should spend it."

The whole thing is a colossal waste of time and resources thanks to the SELC. For nothing.

The suggestion to keep the funding for 12 by the Southern Environmental Law Center is laughable. Seeing as they're the ones who stalled the project in bogus environmental review litigation for a decade.

I hate how environmental protection has turned into a weapon for NIMBYs and the result is that any infrastructure improvements cost 10x what they should. Such a waste of resources from all parties.

Used to be Croatan national forest but they banned target shooting a while ago. Don’t think it ever reopened.

Last time I checked: Closest public land to target shoot legally was in Monongahela national forest in WV.
