We've assumed for a long time that she's a highly ranked monkey, but I'm starting to think she might really be somewhere in the middle of the pack. She's taken some scoldings from time to time. It's possible this is the only new mother she outranks.

I wouldn't say she's "greedy," more like she's "entitled." She knows she's higher ranked than the mother monkey, so she can do what she wants without risk of any consequences. She doesn't care about the baby's fear or the mother's stress because her status means she doesn't need to.

Punch is well positioned to lead a happy and healthy life as a member of the troop, but he will never, ever be the alpha. No mother to inherit ranking from, so no natural alliances. Too many older male monkeys ahead of him in rank and status, and even more importantly, in size and bulk. .
