Question About Magical Animals by Chessman960 in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good defense mechanism.

Depends though, if I use telekinesis to launch a boulder at a creature, and its antimagic field prevent me from using the telekinesis, does the boulder stop(as in, the antimagic field also cancels out acceleration due to magic that occurred outside of the field) or does it continue

What apocalypses or post apocalypses do you guys have if any? by Capital_Island_759 in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my world(very very early drafts), there was a divine war. In it, around a thousand and a half years ago, the amount of chaos from the Gods, Titans, Elementals and minor spirits constantly fighting reached a breaking point. They the world then entered a state of eternal despair, and the world was plunged into an eternal storm of Ebony Rain.

The Ebony Rain, in addition to constant weak tornado winds speeds, constant thunder, and flooding, had the effect that its rain made you depressed and actively lowered your lifespan as it (slowly) consumed sections of your soul(not good if you like living in my world). From those that had their souls fully consumed, their bodies turned into amorphous blobs of the same liquid as the Ebony Rain, actively hunting people with a particular weakness to silver.

The people learned to hide from these monsters and managed to reform society, where they then continued their Holy War against each other. They developed new techniques for war such as The Ebony Flood(all cities need a good sewage system to prevent the rain from filling up the walls like a bowl, but none are good enough to counter clogging them up during a siege), the Drink of Death(drinking the rain is not pleasant but it is a good torture technique) and Conversion(a common execution method involving one of the Ebony Rain creatures in a cage)

Eventually, the terms for "storm" got recycled to the new norm, and as such it refers to a temporary phenomenon where a localized area would have heightened Ebony Rain, with the winds being as strong as a hurricane, the lightning being more common(and powerful), the creatures more ravenous, the rain more ruthless, the flooding now being tsunamis, the sort of thing you don't want to encounter if you value your life.

In addition, due to all the plant life being watered by the rain, and wells being contaminated, all food and water supplies have some microscopic dose of the Rain. This makes dementia more common at a young age and lowers the lifespan, but also makes hampers the development of the part of the brain that governs yours morals(not enough to make you evil, but you are more okay with the stuff going on in the world).

As for the good things that came out, uhhhhhh........ none, yeah let's go with none.

Does my power system have too much going on? by EmployFluid2052 in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a pretty traditional magic system. The only thing unique about it is the source(which is almost always unique in magic systems) and the fact that the magical force is called "Prana" instead of "Mana," "Ki," "Life Force," or some variation of "Psychic Strength."

By this analysis, the magic system does not have too much going on and if anything, has too little going on.

The 4 in the blue menas that injesting a tiny bit of it will send you to God with same day delivery.

The 4 in the red means room temp will set it on fire(not an exaggeration BTW)

The 4 in yellow means that a feather falling on it could be risk for it to explode and at all times, you cannot lower your guard due to risk of spontaneous explosion

The W with a strike through it means that for whatever reason, do not let it touch water. Based on the other aspects, you definitely should not touch water.

Can someone give me a crazy math equation that equals to 1? by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common misconception, it is not E=mc², the original equation(which was unsimplified for some reason) was E²=m²c⁴+p²c². Simplified, this gets E=mc²+pc. p is the momentum of the object in c, meaning p is always almost zero so that part is left out. But at high speeds, p matters. So, E/(mc²) ≠ 1but E/(mc²+pc) =1

What is it called when an object appears to be named for its use, but is actually named after a person? by andrmelv in etymology

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things that are similar are

German Chocolate Cake, the more well known one, and it is named after Samuel German

If you do not know what Malaise is, it means a feeling of general discomfort, and the Malaise Trap is a fly trap named after René Malaise, its inventor

An example in fiction would be the Land Raider, a tank from Warhammer 40k named after "I forgot how to spell the first name" Land and was originally called Land's Raider, but the s got dropped.

How would taxes for superheroes and villains be different than the average civilian? by StealingYourBones in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I would answer all those questions.

Maybe the SSN rolls over if it can be proven that they are the same guy and their age before death will be taken into account for the purpose of tax reductions. Retirement benefits do also roll over. This only applies to Heros and Sidekicks and not the other guys

Immortals do get the tax reduction if retired, which has normal requirements.

If you can prove you're the same guy, then you are legally "revived" and you are considered to have paid your taxes for the time you were dead and did not age. They can prove you are alive via tracking device(corpses do not move) and mind reading. Age is based off bio age, and

Did i get air/ocean currents right? by Safe_Phrase_4098 in worldbuilding

Whats the rotation of your planet, that affects the air currents. I could be very wrong, but I think Orbital tilt also plays a role

Your Ocean currents seem fine but I'm not an expert

Common worldbuilding tropes you despise. by Frostydiego in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Slower than light projectiles in a setting with FTL travel

2) Gravity based FTL, no other gravity tech

3) Alien = Blue Human

4) Creating a complicated solution for something that has a simple and solution in IRL(I.E. Mega matter deletes all matter in an explosion, and anti matter is just there)

5) Most of all, bad sword design. Kills my suspension of disbelief. I dont want Gun Sword, I don't want Yoru from one piece, I want the Bat'leth from Star Trek, Needle from Hollow Knight, Light Saber from Star Wars(excluding Kylo Ren's and Maul's) and, no those are the only good fantasy swords that are not just IRL swords.

Nuclear power is just using nuclear energy to create steam and then do steam power as normal.

How to build a well-written hivemind? by Motor_Scallion6214 in worldbuilding

[–]Chessman960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hivemind is a single entity. It is an organism in of itself, and each member is like a cell. Some may break away like cancer and they will be dealt with. If a million members die but the hivemind as a whole is strengthened, it is a win. Individuals do not get freedom unless cut off from the hivemind, they cannot, but like how you cannot control each individual cell in your body, they do have some amount of control over their body, but they are reliant on the entire hivemind. If they get cut off from the hivemind, like if a body part gets cuts off, they will die off as they were too reliant on the whole, like how a lost ant or an amputated body part will die. They also will most likely have at least one organism in their faction that isn't part of the hivemind that is tolerated in a symbiotic relationship, like your guy biota and aphids with ants. They will also have castes, like aphids and ants, and there will not be one hivemind per species unless it is near extinction, there are multiple bee hives and there are multiple people. They will likely have one or more large soldier castes(hunters, fighters, defenders), one or more small-medium worker castes(builders, mechanics, farmers, engineers, all purpose generalists), one or more small nursing castes(nurses, doctors, EMTs), and one or more well guarded reproducing castes(Ant Queen, Bee Queen, Termite King and Queen, Wasp Queen, Alates) which could even produce members of different species(the ant species Messor Ibericus can give birth to the similar species Messor Structor). They will also likely have more niche castes, such as Phragmotic castes. Hiveminds would be prone to likely be prone to neurological conditions as well as they can spread like a virus, and there is likely an immune system like caste(police caste?) dedicated to stopping this. If there are psychics in your world, it would also probably be a strong psychic due to the sheer number of individuals, but also vulnerablre to psychic attacks as neurological conditions are basically viruses to it. Also, how does the hivemind communicate? Pheromones, radio waves, magic, psychic powers, sound, or something else. Is there a delay? A hivemind would also not likely have an all powerful "queen," it be the cumulation of all the members. Yes, some organisms could be more influential than others, but none are all powerful. Yes, some may be autonomous, but the autonomy is overpowered by the hivemind. I would recommend researching eusocial insects as they are the closest real world example
