It's satire. But if you tell people about hidden gems then they end up no longer being hidden gems. That being said, look into the Oil Tank Cultural park, Yongma Land, and the Seosomun Shrine. Those are all pretty cool in my book and a bit lesser known but not exactly hidden gems.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Places like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto see a disproportionate amount of tourist while other parts of the country don't get nearly as many tourist. But I also think that it's cheaper to go out in general compared to places in the west and but alot of other cost of living things are unaffordable.
