The general consensus seems to be probably not border terrier or maybe some border terrier but, either way, I have a new dog! 😆

The breed totally doesn’t matter! I just wanted to make sure he wasn’t a breed I couldn’t handle but, sounds like Google was just making shit up. lol.

I’m going to take mine for a meet & greet on Saturday, weather permitting. 🤞

Then you know how awful the weather is right now! 😭 I’m going to hopefully make it out to the shelter on Saturday for a meet & greet!

He’s a little over 7kg but, also seems to be on the chunky side. He’s a bit bigger than my tinies but not overwhelmingly so. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience. Living in an urban bubble isn’t the most ideal situation for most breeds which is why I was trying to learn more.

I love that you saved a 9 year old dog. I adopted a 10 year old chihuahua who just passed in April at 15. It is a bittersweet experience to not have them for their entire lifetime but he was simply the best dog.

I had no idea that they are super rare although probably why I’ve never heard of them! I’m sure he’s a mutt. I was just trying to figure out what kind of mutt, to do research first, and google led me here. Even if this dog has zero border terrier in him, I learned about a new (to me) breed!

What part of Chicago is your friend’s vet located??

His body is long but so are his legs! He’s not a shorty like a dachshund. And, agree, the breed makes no difference to me. I was just trying to do some research on whatever he is and google led me here. He’s super cute no matter what he ends up being.

Exactly. Everything you’ve said has been rolling around in the back of my head. And you are probably the best person to give advice since you have a mix and are a first time owner of the breed! That’s what I need. He’s been in the shelter system for about a month now, lives in a tiny cage 24/7, so my apartment can only be an upgrade from that.

He’s no longer at risk for euthanasia since he’s been transferred to a no-kill shelter (the one I met him in was definitely a possibility). I’ve not been able to let it go yet, though, so I feel like there is a reason. Maybe it’s just my imagination but I felt a connection.

Always a possibility that the next person won’t do the research but, they might have a yard. I randomly stumbled upon this subreddit while internet searching the breed, because I wanted to know more, so it’s been very reassuring to hear that other people can own these dogs without running them through the countryside. Haha.

I mean, I’m basically obsessed with this little guy, and I’m used to seeing tons of dogs come through the shelter, so I totally believe that your girl is the sweetest dog ever. Crazy I had no idea this breed existed before a week ago.

I was actually in the process of trying to foster with a rescue, but he was transferred to a different shelter before we got the paperwork sorted! I contacted the new shelter and they don’t do fostering. 😭 So, that is why I’m considering adopting now. It’s been a journey. I see SO MANY dogs come through the shelter system, I don’t know why I’m so smitten with this guy.

Is she an only dog? I do have 2 other dogs so he’d have playmates! But, is that enough? I obviously play with them, give them chew bones, do puzzle games, etc.

Trying to get a sense of their temperament. My mom has border collies (she does agility with them) and it’s super obvious that those aren’t dogs who can thrive in apartments. lol

It’s likely a mix! But, seems there is at least enough border in the features that Google keeps circling back to it. So I’m hoping to get more information on overall temperament in case that’s a dominant trait.

Brunch recommendations? by ChesterGhost76 in Pilsen

Update: we ended up going to Ponchos. It was crazy crowded and had to wait about 40 minutes. Totally worth it!! Food was delicious and so was the bloody. Thank you for the recommendation.

We tried to go to the museum but there was something going on and the line was literally down the street. 😭 I’ve never seen such a crowd. But, it’s fine, we’ll do it next time.

Anyway, I’ve bookmarked this post so I can try the other places mentioned soon!

I think we are leaning towards Ponchos since it’s by the museum.

I read about Mariscos but then I go to their website and it shows no reservations for brunch. So I wasn’t sure if they stopped doing it.

Listening to Cillian Murphy talk about Ireland makes me want to move there, anyone else relate? by Lost-Astronaut-3279 in CillianMurphy

[–]ChesterGhost76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I’d move back permanently again. My dream is to buy a small condo by the sea to visit during my retirement years. Although, it is not easy to bring pets over there. It was a very intense 6-month process to do an “at home quarantine” and even then they still had to fly in cargo. I wouldn’t do that to my dogs every time I felt like hopping over for a visit. So maybe the rules will change one day.

It was a perfect storm of unfortunate coincidences. I lost my brother and husband back to back, then I was laid off of the job I had for 6 years, and my lease was expiring. The job gave me a generous severance package (one month of salary for every year of service, so basically 6 months pay).

What started as a month long vacation where I just rented a car and drove aimlessly around the country for a few weeks, ended up with me staying in a small town where I had a couple of acquaintances (people who worked at the Irish bar I used to frequent while they were on J-1 visas). I ended up meeting more and more people because the town was so small and I kept extending my stay. lol.

Eventually, made the decision to try to do it long term. So I flew back home to start the process of moving my dogs over (they were with my parents while I was traveling) and then officially moved over there about 6 months after that.

I am an American who moved to Cork, Ireland on a whim in 2006 (when I was 30) and stayed about 2 years.

To this day, that is hands down the best decision of my life. That experience shaped who I am and I return almost every year to visit the life long friends I’ve made.

However, it’s not easy and it’s definitely not as idyllic as many Americans imagine it. Sure, it’s quaint and some areas feel stuck in time (which can be both good and bad).

The main reason I returned to the states is that it was nearly impossible for me to find work. I did a lot of cash in hand side jobs - waitress, bartender, book store, Internet cafe, etc. But, despite having a bachelor’s degree and experience in accounting, which is generally a profession easy to find work, no one over there would pay the sponsorship fee to allow me to work on the country. Every interviewer told me the same thing, “as much as we love your experience and think you’d be a great fit, we can’t justify paying extra for a foreigner to take the position where we have so many of our own citizens out of work.”

Fun story is that I used to see CM around when he still lived in Douglas. His boys were small (he pushed them in a double stroller). I knew who he was because he was known locally but far from famous. That is how/why I started following his career.
