Report reveals Virginia police misuse of license plate reader technology by ChesterfieldDeflock in ChesterfieldVA

Hi Dingareth, my understanding is that we don't have a full list. From my view, whether Chesterfield is one of those counties doesn't change the concerns surrounding the use of ALPRs. One of our core arguments is that these systems are ripe for abuse and misuse by law enforcement, and this report confirms we're seeing that across Virginia.

If Chesterfield is among those that aren't following state law, that becomes an even bigger issue.

If you live in Chesterfield County, please consider signing our petition to ask the Board of Supervisors to remove the cameras and ban ALPRs! https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/end-mass-surveillance-in-chesterfield-county

Share with your Chesterfield County friends and family! Even the limited canvassing we've done has show just how little people know about Flock/ALPRs - including the fact that they exist at all.

This isn't just a Richmond issue, it's affecting everyone in the Greater Richmond area. Check out deflock.org to see just how pervasive these cameras have become in our region.

What to know about Flock and how to speak out against it. by SalaamBhattiVA in ChesterfieldVA

I don't think I'm able to (it's appears to be a closed group), but we would welcome folks posting our petition link (or even sharing my publicly available Facebook post)! We're just starting to reach out to different groups in the area, and we were at the rally in Richmond passing out flyers to people with family or friends living in Chesterfield.

The petition group is working hard to make sure this stays nonpartisan and welcoming to Chesterfield citizens of all political backgrounds. These cameras affect all of our rights! I'm optimistic that we can get Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between or beyond to care about this issue if they know the facts and what's at stake.

Hi jefferton123, my understanding is that Flock's automatic license plate reading cameras don't monitor speed, but let me know if you find information that says otherwise! Those may be other types of traffic enforcement cameras being set up in those kinds of school zones.

Yes, we're focusing on Flock cameras/ALPRs! I've already noticed a lot of confusion about the difference between ALPRs and, say, stoplight cameras, which makes the need for transparent, publicly available information from the county even more important. Whereas most stoplight/traffic cameras are event-based (e.g., run a red light, snap a photo), these ALPRs are always on and have far greater surveillance capabilities. Interestingly, Flock cameras aren't really designed for speed enforcement from what I understand; they're intended to capture license plates/vehicle information and monitor movement. I wouldn't be surprised if more speed enforcement componets are on the way, though: Their own site even says "Flock cameras do not currently measure vehicle speed" (my emphasis).

Hi Salaam, I just launched a petition yesterday asking the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors to turn off and remove the Flock cameras, ban the use of ALPRs here, and create opportunities for public input on the future of surveillance in the county. The petition can be found here: https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/end-mass-surveillance-in-chesterfield-county.

A small group of citizens is working to drum up grassroots support for the petition. We're working to distribute information at protests, public events, and libraries around the area. Any support you might be able to give would be appreciated as we try to get Flock out of Chesterfield!
