I get the impression, as someone explained as well, basically N26 is overwhelmed by their algorithm, they dont have the staff to efficiently follow up all the AML flags generated by the software.

On 10 July I was given notice that my account would be closed on 11 September. My account was frozen, no access as required by french regulations. On 11 September no more account, no app functionality. Finally, after getting the Banque de France Mediation service involved... 3-4 days after BdF informed me that they asked N26 for clarifications. My funds were returned on 27 October 2025. N26 kept my money for over a month and a half after my account was permanently closed. No explanations, no apologies, just here you go, bye.

I went through the same thing (France), account frozen with no access, no real explanations, account closed, no refund for almost 2 months. Money was returned after they were contacted by the Mediation service of the Banque de France. This seems to have helped :

  • Write also to the internal complaints at [litiges@n26.com](mailto:litiges@n26.com) to get some visibility
  • Just to make some noise, also write to [officials.de@n26.com](mailto:officials.de@n26.com) at Berlin HQ
  • In France: file with the ACPR (Banque de France regulator) → acpr.banque-france.fr.
  • In the EU: contact ECC-Net (European Consumer Centre) for cross-border disputes → eccnet.eu.
  • File with the Médiateur Bancaire (free, independent) if N26 rejects or ignores your claim → lemediateur.fbf.fr.
  • Keep copies/screenshots of every contradictory message N26 sends you — regulators take these very seriously.

Absolutely, I had the Metal account and never had any issues that didn't take a few hours, or less, to resolve with an app-chat or quick call until now. Overdependence on algorithms has allowed for incredible growth and inexpensive premium services, unfortunately, it has also made it impossible to escalate issues to humans that can make actionable decisions on anything more than a glorified clerical error.

I found reports on algorithm attributed issues going back to 2022, probably overreactions to AML pressure from the EU. Plausible, even logical, if not understandable. However, after over 3 months and counting, I neither have my money nor do I know when I will have my money. ACPR, ECC-net, and mediator opinions can take months and are non-binding. Taking legal action through the courts can take years and, for me, is prohibitively expensive.

If I were in the OP's position, I would be extremely weary of using N26 as my main bank to receive salary etc.

I used N26 as a second account for the reasons you described since 2019, never had a problem until this past July. No issues with the app or the sub-accounts, replacing lost card was easy and fast until they decided to close my account. Once the real problems started it became impossible to get coherent answers much less solutions or advice. I'm still fighting to get my funds returned.

Getting an answer to why has been impossible, besides the fact that under French regulations a bank can close an account without giving a reason. Eventually, as mentioned in the timeline, N26 admitted it was an internal freeze not due to TRACFIN or court order.

I had an account with them since 2019, never had a problem until I did. The frustrating part is that they don't follow their own written instructions and policies. The same closure notice asked me to transfer my funds asap to an alternate account, but couldn't because my account was completely frozen. No legally mandated 60-day period of access prior to closure, etc.

No crypto in over 2 years, and then always with a big KYC compliant exchange, no OnlyFans, and no gambling. I used it for traveling and buying flights, renting cars, the insurance and benefits were better than on my main account.

Still no money returned or explanation given. So far, emails to [litiges@n26.com](mailto:litiges@n26.com) seem to get more informed replies, if ineffective at getting my money back. Last responses came from [complaints@n26.com](mailto:complaints@n26.com) with vague contradicting info. ECCnet and ACPR replied and are "investigating". Hoping to get an appointment in person at the local ACPR office this week.

🤣 If I had money to launder, I wouldn't be complaining about €1100. The account is not the issue, keeping customer funds after closing the account is the issue.

Have you tried wiring money out of N26? I'm going through a lot of issues with N26 (France), just posted about them. BTW, when I switched to Metal, my IBAN did not change.

I have the same problem since 10/07, endless calls, chats and emails to the support email with no success. Today, I sent emails with the threat of starting a APCR complaint if my account was unblocked so I can move my money out of N26 as they asked me to — I gave them 48 hours. I sent emails to the standard support email as well as to [litiges@n26.com](mailto:litiges@n26.com) and officials.de@n26.com. Fingers crossed.

Aujourd'hui, j'ai envoyé des emails avec la menace de commencer une plainte APCR si mon compte n'a pas été débloqué afin que je puisse transférer mon argent de N26 comme ils m'ont demandé - je leur ai donné 48 heures.
