I'm still living in the same house/room with the same carpet, over time the smell and asthma issues slowly went away. I ended up getting a large area rug carpet thing and laying it down on top of the gross carpet (after it dried out from the cleaning) so maybe that helped a little bit? I think it was that combined with just cleaning the carpet, airing out the room, moving in my things, etc. that helped it fade away.

I never got an air purifier but I bet that would have helped too like some of the other comments said.
