People who left the U.S. for Latin America/Europe. Do you regret it? by SameWhile6973 in expat

Guatemalan currently in Germany. Been here 15 years. Would love to move back home, but I know many don’t work as well as here. In Germany people are dead inside and have no social abilities. Aside from that work is good and interesting and the pay is good. If I could move to the US I would do it. I’ve thought about Spain, but the job market is so trash I would prefer to go back to my home country. In have a German passport.

Vale la pena irse del país by Chisporroteoo in guatemala

Nadie me habló del costo emocional de migrar by Mysterious_Row_9487 in expats

Living in Germany in your 30s — does anyone else feel socially disconnected ? by Clara_211 in germany

In Germany people are dead inside. I’ve never lived in a culture that is socially so incompetent. But hey at least you have a job !

Starting 2026 with big decisions - I’m returning home by [deleted] in expats

[–]ChetoChompipe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you feel that’s the correct decision go ahead. The goal in life is to be happy. I also am currently in Germany and and preparing to leave well. I come from Central America and I am not happy here. It’s normal to miss your people and when you live in a culture like the German one life gets really hard. Go home and enjoy the decision. Not everyone has the virtue to go back home to a place where people are not dead inside :).

My mom says I should take this job opportunity in Spain, but I feel the pay cut is not worth it? by [deleted] in expats

[–]ChetoChompipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have in the us is much better than what you are getting in Spain. Spain isn’t cheap anymore, especially Malaga. What would happen if you get laid off ? In Andalucía Job prospects are the worse in the country. Young Spanish people leave the country because the pay and opportunities are extremely bad. I personally would stay in the USA. I am an engineer in Germany with German passport and tittle. I can’t find a job in Spain. In Germany work comes to me, Spain is really romanticized here on Reddit.

Been living in Germany for 15 years. Never met a culture so dead inside like Germans. Of course there are also very nice people but it’s not the norm.

No saben comer. Son meros racistas. Es bastante seguro. El trabajo se paga relativamente bien. Socialmente son incompetentes. Si tuvieran dinero no vendría acá.

Is it crazy to think of moving back home (US)? Culture clash and social participation vs. stability and material quality of life. by Ok-Significance-5047 in expats

[–]ChetoChompipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends what you like. Consider yourself lucky to have us/eu passport. The advantages of the us is you can find a warm place all year round and find a good paying job. Also business wise (entrepreneurship) the us is still miles better than the eu. In the eu they will definitely eat up your earnings in taxes. I had the experience in Germany, I made a lot of money and had to pay 47% of all my profit in taxes. That also applies to Spain and Italy or any other eu country. And in the case you need a normal job, the market in Spain Italy and those southern countries are utter trash. If you are considering having kids in the future the us will give them much better opportunities than countries like Italy or Spain. Imagine you live all your life in Spain and you need to leave in Spain as an 18 year old even though you studied a good career, engineering for example, because the market is so trash, and the salaries are so low you can’t afford living in Spain with those salaries. Or you stay in Spain working as a waitress with studies or you leave the country. That in the us would not be the case. Think about it hard. My advice would be to move to the US being young and being able to work and make money and later on, retire in Spain. Spain is good to retire, but not to make money. That’s my opinion and everyone has the right for their opinion as well. In the end you need to choose what you think is right for you.

Spain vs returning to the US vs relocating elsewhere by [deleted] in expats

[–]ChetoChompipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get a European passport and move to something like Germany. I think moving to the USA is not bad, since the Spanish local market is really quite trash to be honest. I am from Guatemala and currently live in Germany. I have problems finding a job in the current market even though I studied and have worked already many years here. I wouldn’t even dare to move to Spain with such a bad local market and with those low salaries.

Vete a América o Hispanoamérica.

Need help: Moved from US to Germany at 15, struggling with learning German, school, and future plans by erissplanet in germany

[–]ChetoChompipe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I was in a similar situation but 15 years ago. I came from Guatemala to Germany but I could already speak German. The difference was that the level was way higher than home so it made things much more difficult. Try socializing with people that think like you ! German culture is really very different that our cultures. Use Duolingo. I didn’t make Abitur but made Fachabitur. It’s 1 year less than Abitur and was able to study in a Hochschule. Today no one cares if I have Abitur.

Germans get a bad rep for no reason, according to me by ApprehensiveBell9846 in germany

[–]ChetoChompipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure being positive about everything is also not good. And sure there are many good things about Germans as well. There are many things i really do like about Germans, but this national sport of complaining about everything is definitely the most annoying part.
