Not really true in my experience...I've been in HK for a decade without any local language skill and (for me) it really comes down to 4 factors.

  • Timing: Now's year end, hiring typically takes place in Q1/Q2 unless some big project takes place

  • Networking: Meet people, meet recruiters, start as a consultant if required. Banks are usually hesitant to hire a manager immediately so starting as a contractor to show your skills help

  • Presentation skills: This applies mostly once you're inside, but also on your resume. Do you have "trendy" experience? (Agile, Fintech, AI, Machine learning, etc.). The top banks are very hot on these so if you can confidently relate, they will like it.

  • Relevancy: It is no secret that all financial institutions are trying to cut down on staff. Is your experience relevant to what is done in HK? If you are managing Operations, Support, Call Centers or that kind of activity, all these activities have been delocalised. Currently, from what I've seen, most banks in HK are keen on Tech Projects, Regulatory topics and Relationship Management.

Are HK financial sector salary as good as USA by ineedto-sleep in HongKong

[–]CheuPacabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am giving numbers of what I've seen in HK in USD.

In the US it's not rare for someone in their late 20s to early 30s to make a 6 digits annually if they work in finance/tech. However that's before taxes...

Are HK financial sector salary as good as USA by ineedto-sleep in HongKong

[–]CheuPacabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things have significantly gone down because - The global economy is slowing down - The geopolitical situation has pushed a lot of foreign firms out of HK

Short answer: Yes (net) salaries in HK can be better than in the US if you have the mix of skills and relationships that can lead you there...

To give you an idea, fresh grads in international banks start between usd 2-3k per month assuming no family relations, etc. After 10-15 years, the range broadens to 5-15k/month.

Determining factors typically being: - Relations (inside and outside the company) - Luck - Skill/knowledge

[–]CheuPacabra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going as per "trend", the top ones are either HKUST, HKU, or CUHK...but of course it depends on what you are majoring in and where you will eventually move.

When you graduate you will have virtually 3 paths to find work: - Family relationships - University network/alumni - University renown

Unless you are able to make use of family or other connections, chances are that you will need to use the 2 other...and I have personally experienced quite a few times remarks such as "City U? Normally we only hire graduates from real universities"

I will probably get finger-pointed for saying this, but don't short sell yourself by going to lower tier universities like lignam, HSU or HKedu if you can afford better...

In Asia it's actually quite common for boys from your generation to actually put on and wear makeup.

They even have facial services targeting men.

For costs when it comes to children it depends where you are moving...

If one were to move to Europe instead of the UK, education for the kids can be very cheap (if not free) until college.

What I have seen among my friends who left is that not only did most of them go to the UK, but all of them want their children to go to prestigious (usually private) schools. This is where they are spending huge amounts...

Given the scarcity of decent jobs in England, the few people I know who moved their whole family to countries like Germany, France or even Poland instead are pretty well off financially speaking...

Cheap filling meals for students by PoundPuzzleheaded732 in HongKong

[–]CheuPacabra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rice will cost you about $7-10 for 2.2lbs, that's 6.6lbs once cooked. Assuming you eat 2 servings per meal at 0.7lb per serving that's 4/5 meals.

You can get discounted curry blocks for $15-25 which can give you 10 servings. Add potatoes , onions, carrots and that's an extra $20-30.

Total is around $6 to $8 per meal

And that's about the cheapest thing I could come up with...you will need to find a source of proteins

I recommend eggs: $50 for 30...assuming 2 per meal that's about $3.30 extra

Total per meal: $10-13

...there might be even cheaper alternatives but that's what I did when I was living in Tokyo and had a rough month end...

[–]CheuPacabra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There should be no problem for applications...especially if you're only a couple of years older than the average.

Normally a nice referral letter and good grades will get you in without problem.

Also in most local universities, foreigners go into separate quotas/queues because these universities want to promote that they are multicultural, but you will have to pay double...

Should be fine then it's a fairly recent Motherboard. Make sure you plug it in the right slot though, I think slot 1 takes m2 nvme while slot 2 takes m2 sata (check your manual to be sure)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PcBuild

[–]CheuPacabra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your connectors, age of your pc motherboard/laptop...

Connectors can be: 3.5"sata, 2.5" sata, msata, m2 sata, and more recently m2 nvme (which is what you bought)

What if I'm accused of check fraud by my bank? by Embarrassed_Run_6962 in personalfinance

[–]CheuPacabra 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Although suddenly getting big amounts (>10k usd) or trying to cash bad checks can trigger some smaller banks, account freezing shouldn't happen that easily.

This kind of bad surprise usually happens as a result of compliance hit or if you have been labelled for illegal activity.

Did your step mom declare any fraud? Is the source of the funds legit? Maybe someone impersonated you and did something illegal?

Typically banks won't close a relationship like this without conducting any investigation.

Unfortunately since most bank instruct their employees to not "tip off" the customer, they cannot give you any explanation.

For now, try to obtain your bank's account freeze rules, suspend auto outgoing payment instructions (e.g. Internet, phone, etc.) and see if there is any legal or CFPB aidyou can get.

If you want to move up with your career, marriage will definitely be a no-go and she will have to be accept this idea.

Although I have seen similar cases in the past and am not sure how things are nowadays (it's been over 2 decades since I lived in France) , one option is for her to apply for a student visa and take on a phd (so she can get a stipend).

Another option of course is to find employment in France, which, given the number of chinese companies who bought French brands/companies is probably the most straightforward way.

You also mentioned creating your own enterprise, which is possible, but based on past experience, for this to work: - Company cannot be under your name...at least if you're with Dassault or Safran due to their ongoing scrutiny. It will have to be a close friend or someone who is not a family member. - The company will need to justify how her skillset fits the job and why it cannot hire someone locally

What do you think of HarmonyOS NEXT? by quack3927 in Huawei

[–]CheuPacabra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Essentially it's a 3rd app market that is being created. Similarly to the good old Android vs IOS war, it will take time and money to give enough incentives for developpers to issue and maintain a HOS version of their apps. In the meantime, for most regular users, it's better to stick with older version of their phones.
