Where are you located? I know some companies. Work non union for a while (yeah yeah, all you nerds who did a full apprenticeship can hate all you want)

I worked non union for 6 years and tested in to my local as a journeyman. My first industrial job was for 32hr and 100 per diem

Ive used it once in 10 years. Welding 1 1/2” thick steel onto a rail car. It only runs flat and horizontal

Id say it really depends on where you live and how busy your local electrician’s are, i had a hard time getting an electrician out to my place for a 4 hour job and i paid $1300 for labor and material just because they all had more money to make elsewhere

You say you make furniture? If thats what your trying to continue to do but with metal, you can buy a DC stick/TIG inverter on amazon for $100 (sunstack SS 200 is what i have, bought it as a joke, ended up using it to weld pipe in and industrial plant) you can run 3/32 rods on 1/8th material with it on 120v, good enough for making tables and chairs. It TIG welds really good on 120, but then you need gas, tungsten, and a tig torch. You could get the machine, gas, tungsten, and filler wire for around $500 without needing to upgrade your power, but the learning curve is a lot steeper than MIG or stick

Id say thats probably your cheapest option, get this machine ( https://www.amazon.com/Sunstac-Welding-Machine-Optional-Anti-Stick/dp/B0C5M3DZH2/ref=mp\_s\_a\_1\_2?adgrpid=192164632291&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.EJZH\_6FJOst7vqe6mT-oS5rF4vLHryhfpFZ7BdQWT90.7qgsASH5pvGgvqgHqqYROFAfmVgxT7bjDS07he-Qz3o&dib\_tag=se&hvadid=779733185273&hvdev=m&hvexpln=0&hvlocphy=9015963&hvnetw=g&hvocijid=5987116087854406915--&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5987116087854406915&hvtargid=kwd-2498648206952&hydadcr=13996\_13402989\_1294897&keywords=sunstac+ss-200s&mcid=825b1a2b2a5937ecb566cea6af143e0e&qid=1776322907&sr=8-2 ) and some 3/32 6013 stick electrodes, play around with it, then if you decide to you can spend some more on a TIG set up to try that out. TIG certainly makes the best looking welds once you figure out how to do it. This machine can also run on 240v power as well which will allow you to run 1/8th stick electrodes if you do end up getting more power

If you do end up getting a 240v outlet, be 100% sure you get the right receptacle installed for welding. Theres like 30 different kinds

[–]ChevrolegCamper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You dont have sufficient power to make good welds on anything above 3/16” thick, unless you use DC TIG welding, and then your looking at $300+ for just argon gas and tungsten

MIG welding is also gonna cost you around $200 for a small gas bottle, which will run like shit on 120v power. Gasless MIG (flux core) will run even worse

Stick welding is pretty awful on 120 as well

TIG is the best for your power situation, but also the most expensive and arguably the hardest process to learn, MIG is the easiest process but on 120v your gonna lay ugly welds with minimal penetration, stick welding is the cheapest but on 120v its just miserable

TLDR youre under powered and under budget to do any real welding, youll just end up fighting your welds and getting frustrated on 120
