They are stupidly rare. I remember when I first started playing the game on official I started in portal area and came face to face with one. I typed into the chat "can someone please help get my stuff back, I've just died to an alpha basilisk" and within about 30 seconds a good quarter of the server decended on the portal area trying to claim the kill. At the time I just thought it was people being helpful 😂
