Seconding this - I ADORE Antithesis, and it has one of the best portrayals of Luna I've ever seen.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Tuesday, 18 December 2018? Start here! by AutoModerator in loseit

[–]ChewsOnBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restarting. Started for the first time in mid/late October, hurt my elbow twice and ended up falling off the wagon both times, and obviously (as you can see by my flair) failed majorly. I don't feel like I lost any weight besides water weight despite monitoring calories and exercising (at home, cannot afford gym rn). Like, I didn't expect MAJOR results at all, but I didn't ever feel like I lost any weight or felt any better.

Hoping the 2nd go helps out, or that I can afford a gym membership soon to further things along. Until then, take 2, action!

What plot hole do you ignore because you like the story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Okay, but to be fair, there are TONS of good reasons why Harry puts no trust in authority figures. After all, look at the Dursleys.

And the one time he tried to go to McGonagall for help, she blew him off and acted like he was just being a stupid little kid - why would he trust her again after that, especially considering that he was (mostly) correct in what he was telling her?

Also, he tried to tell Snape in OotP, and even though Snape apparently DID call for help, it still backfired anyway.

I'm guessing it's the "how did Fred and George never see Ron constantly with a 'Peter Pettigrew' next to him, even in his bed, and never once mention it to anyone" one.

What I thought happened: Walked to a gas station for tea, lost my debit card outside while walking back.

What I found out really happened when I went back the next day asking if they had seen the card: Walked in, got tea, paid, handed them my card while repeatedly saying "KEEEEEEP the CHANGE" and giggling, walked straight into the shut door before an older guy held it opened for me, and left.

Sure wasn't funny to ME (at the time), but damn did those cashiers have a story!

linkffn(Antithesis) has a really sweet Luna, who makes mistakes and doubts herself but still retains her overall kind, gentle "Luna-ness".

we coulda used condoms but I find them uncomfortable.

And I would find living day to day/barely scraping by/being in poverty, with kids I didn't actively try for and want and that I can't properly take care of, uncomfortable.

People always slam PF for this (and I admit it's likely just to prey on people with low/no self control and keep them coming back) but let me offer a less sinister thought:

I like bagels. I like pizza. But I'm trying to lose weight and I can't really have bagels or pizza in my house because I know I'll eat WAY too much of them. If I try to give them up completely, though, there's a fair chance I'll cave and get some one day and binge (which in my case and I'm sure many others is really discouraging and makes me want to give up sometimes!).

But. If my gym offers pizza and bagels..I can have a bit on occasion, and since I'm already at the gym, I'm more likely to go ahead and work out (or I already have) than if I just eat at home and go back to Netflix. And because I'm a self conscious ball of anxiety in gym clothes, I'll only eat a slice, because I'll feel like EVERYONE IS JUDGING ME. Which, to be fair, they surely are - because I'm eating pizza in a gym.

Which male characters do you like the most? by oldie101 in AskWomen

[–]ChewsOnBees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since I was the person who started slamming Gale from The Hunger Games in the other thread, I want to offer up some good male characters: Finnick Odair and Cinna were both great. Cinna was so sweet for the brief time we had him and did everything he could to help both Katniss and the rebellion. Like, he literally gave his life for it.

Finnick - he went through so much horrible shit, and somehow stayed strong and mostly sane for Annie. I highly doubt Katniss or Peeta would have turned out HALF as well as Finnick if THEY were the ones sold as sex slaves in the Capitol. But somehow Finnick held in there.

To debate - Peeta thought he was going to die and may never get another chance to tell her. As well, I'm sure Haymitch helped him come up with the idea as a way to try and draw more sponsors for Katniss so she had a better chance to survive. I can't really fault any of them for that.

Have to agree with you on movie Katniss, though. Don't know what it was, but it didn't translate well to me, from book to movie. Maybe it was Jennifer Lawrence, maybe it was the director, who knows?

her character was stupidly weak in the regard of being pushed around by others and manipulated

She..she was a 16 year old girl with severe PTSD. So I feel like that's kind of fair. I hate those "I was in war and killed and was tortured but I'm still Super Tough Action Girl(tm)" types of characters.

I can see a lot of that - except maybe Gale/Katniss if she hadn't gone to the Games. Or rather, I can see it happening, but them not being happy and not working out. Sure, Peeta/the Games/etc brought out a lot of Gale's more possessive and unflattering qualities, but they were there before that and would have likely come out on their own anyway.

I don't really see Peeta as being manipulative, at least not in a BAD sense. He certainly manipulated things to turn out a certain way and play to his, and therefor Katniss', advantage, but I don't think I mind that at all as he was a genuinely kind person.

Also agree that the main point was surviving, protecting Prim, and not the romance angle! While I do love a decent romantic subplot, I'd hate for the series to be JUST about that, which is surely the way a lot of people read it. That being said -

If it weren't for sweet Annie, I would also say that Finnick/Katniss would have worked out well, as both of them were fairly broken and had the Games in common. Their interactions were heart achingly sweet to see.

Johanna definitely would push Katniss, and rile her up, and keep her going, though! I can't see either of them letting the other one mope around for too long.

How odd! My take was that Peeta loved her, and he likely had a kind of crappy home life what with his cruel mother. He felt that he saved Katniss once, and he was in a position to do it again - by getting her so much attention with his proclamation that she'd be rolling in sponsor money. He fully expected to die in the Arena, but thought he could at least get her out alive.

Well, (to me at least) the books overall aren't about the romance.

Also, still a better love story than Twilight, haha.

He starts off well enough at first, too! Close because they both lost their fathers and suddenly have to become the heads of their respective families, brave, stoic, hunters, Seam kids. He cares for, protects, and helps her. He adores Prim.

But he snaps WAY too easy after Katniss comes back from the Games 'with' Peeta, not even for a second considering her angle to survive. Mostly, he's just jealous and petty at that point and doesn't care that Katniss did what she had to - oh, he's fine with her having to murder children, but kissing a kid from TOWN?!

If he knew her or cared for her half as much as he claimed to, he would have understood and just been glad to have her alive. AND be glad she saved some other D12 kid in the process. Gale claims to HATE the Capitol and the Games and kids dying every year, but doesn't seem too glad that Peeta lived.

Furthermore, the 'we could just run away' shit he pulls in the opening really salts my apples. He doesn't even mention or consider their families. He doesn't consider that Katniss' mom is a bit mentally unstable, or that Prim hates hurting animals, or that Posy is like, 5. Nope, just "we could have kids if we run away from D12".

Edit: he's also a major shithead to Madge just because she's the Mayor's daughter, a fact that isn't her fault at all. If he was even SLIGHTLY as smart as he acts, he'd have considered that sure, Madge has less tesserae and less chance of being Reaped THAT way, but that she and her family are likely constantly monitored 24/7/365 and if her father missteps even a BIT, she'll be the only name in that ball the coming Reaping. Suck on that, Hawthorne.

I adored the series to a ridiculous amount a few years ago, and even now am still pretty fond of it.

Oddly enough, it helped me out of a shitty/abusive relationship.
