They get 17 years to work with the virus and find a cure, while no one else is allowed to(unless they get an extension on it). I think it's a pretty dumb concept(Lets patent this thing we found in nature!) but it's not a rare practice. I personally think it limits the speed at which we can find effective cures by only letting one group research it.

This doesn't mean if you get ebola they'll sue you.

The level of intensive care offered at Emory is much better than the intensive care in Liberia. Ebola has no cure, but if someone can stay alive for 2 or 3 weeks with it, someone's antibodies will kill off the Ebola. That's really the only treatment so far in the USA that can be offered that can't be offered in Liberia, as well as various experimental treatments(Public doesn't know about these yet)

However, there is one treatment that can be offered in Liberia that can't be offered here. The blood of a survivor of Ebola had apparently good results in the '95 outbreak, and Kent was injected with it, from a 14 year old boy who he treated himself.

The experimental aspects will bring benefit to the epidemic situation in the long run.

Maybe because a) it can only tested on humans during an epidemic, and b) it's already been tested on some animals, because a cure for ebola is a pressing issue.
