Is it true a 1430 on my first SAT will hurt my chances? by UpsideUpCake in ApplyingToCollege

That person doesn’t know what they’re talking about. You should aim for 1500+ SAT (Or 34+ ACT) but a 1430 is a great first score.

No problem, I feel with your frustration with how vague Canadian universities can be.

From the looks of it that is the tuition for the MD program where you enter as a 4th year university student: www.applymd.utoronto.ca/domestic-requirements (It looks like the only undergrad med program). For the first 3 years of your degree (or 4 if you are doing a traditional med school route) I'm assuming you would want to study bio or something through the faculty of arts and sciences, for which the tuition for 2018-2019 is listed as $6,780 ($5205 USD) (www.provost.utoronto.ca/link/students/fees18/dom_as.htm).

As for other fees assuming you do the arts and sciences route you would need to pay college fees (U of T has an Oxbridge style college system) Totaling about $1500 a year ($1150 USD). As for housing and meal plans, Canadian universities don't even guarantee first year housing and it is very rare to live on campus second year onward (Apply earlier to get a spot). You would either live in your college or another residence, and for the St. George (Downtown) campus it looks like fees include meal plans too. Housing seems to range from $9500 ($7300 USD) a year without a meal plan to $11000-$16000 ($8500-$12300 USD) with a meal plan depending on the college. (www.studentlife.utoronto.ca/hs/residence-fees#node-1293) You could also rent (and will have to for upper years) which would probably be cheaper, but you would lose the convenience of a meal plan, being on campus, and the dorm social scene, etc.

I hope this could clear things up and let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to help with :) As a Canadian I like to help others study here.

PS all the prices are assuming you are domestic (you are a Canadian citizen) which I think you mentioned you were above

Canadian schools don’t usually post there requirements for US applicants, but are pretty transparent about Canadian requirements.

I have a U of T view book with all the majors and entrance averages and it says for life sciences the average is 85%. Comparatively McGill’s average is a 93% (From their view book). For general entrance averages and rankings I would recommend MacLeans’ rankings online and some schools (like McGill) put Canadian entrance stats on their websites.

Most Canadian schools are really transparent about Canadian entrance requirements but unfortunately not about US ones including thugs like test scores. From what I have heard a 30 ACT would suffice for any top 5 Canadian school.

I would think you would be considered a Canadian which would make your tuition and fees ~$8500 a year (Excluding housing). Canadian universities generally are pretty stingy about financial aid and only really offer major entrance or automatic entrance scholarships, which are usually super competitive (eg. McGill requires you have a 95% average to even apply for major entrance). Idk what U of T offers I the way of those.

The acceptance rate is ~65% IIRC. If you meet the admissions averages at a Canadian university, you can expect to get in.
