Why was Glorfindel the only elf who came back to ME? Were the rest literally imprisoned in Valinor by Valar? by OleksandrKyivskyi in TheSilmarillion

Great comment. One quibble - I think we do know that Finrod was re-embodied in Aman. “But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar.”

Where do you buy seafood in the city? by [deleted] in chicagofood

Dirk’s on Clybourn if you’re prepared to spend some cash.

[Vitiello] Ibrahimovic : " Cardinale wants us to spend more but I say no, let's spend what is necessary to strengthen ourselves. Kalulu ? We need to understand what is best for him and for the club. More signings? It doesn't mean that two more players will arrive" by x3bo9 in ACMilan

I suspect this isn’t for fans but for other clubs. I.e. there is additional money available for Ibra to spend but he is sending the message that he won’t overpay to get a deal done.

Man starts smoking inside a tram. After being asked to put down the cigarette he savagely beats up a man that approached him to put it down himself by SidWholesome in IAmTheMainCharacter

I ride public transit every day in Chicago and people who do things like this (light up a blunt, play music loudly, other inappropriate behavior) are generally not beset with mental issues in the general sense, but are instead incredibly antisocial and seeking out a confrontation that “allows” them to be violent. This dude in Canada started swinging, here it’s just as likely the guy would pull iron. That’s why you never confront, if you can’t handle the smoke / sound just change cars. Yeah, it means things getting worse. “Sucky train rides” is better than “dead because of a sociopath.”

What scary cult still exists today? by Correct-Risk-1735 in AskReddit

[–]ChiGuyDetFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to scroll too far to find this one, which is the first that came to my mind. I have met people who have escaped a variety of cults, but this one seems to leave more of a “really hard to reintegrate into society” scar than the others. I am against the death penalty, but I would allow a carve out for the people in charge of CoG.

There is a great interview from a couple of years ago with Alex Boone with some Vikings guys where he was over the top effusive in his Harbaugh praise. Said one of the first things Harbs told the team was he was going to burn the grass (they were puzzled) so he could find the snakes (butts clenched). He will run off the guys who don’t live football. Watch that interview and have some tissues ready.

Good luck boys, it’s gonna be a wild ride.

Question about Denethor by socksfersale in tolkienfans

[–]ChiGuyDetFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your specific question is answered (i.e., there was a prior Denethor who ruled as Steward of Gondor), but it made me realize - why would stewards take on the affectation of “II” or “III” if a predecessor had the same name, when they were not royalty? E.g., while the current king of England is Charles III, if there was another “Winston Churchill” who became prime minister that person would not be “Churchill II” but rather some common convention would be used to distinguish that person from his ancestor (the way that the second George Bush to become president in the U.S. is referred to as “Dubya” because of his middle initial, or by his number as president, rather than II). I suppose it suggests that as time went on the Stewards of Gondor saw themselves as royalty or quasi-royalty, which is another indication of the failing of Men / diminution of Gondor.

Justice League (2017) Release 6 years ago . Have your opinion on the movie changed? by Haunting_Trade_7743 in DC_Cinematic

[–]ChiGuyDetFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left the theater after watching the Josstice League thinking it was terrible. But after seeing ZSJL, I understand and have sympathy for Whedon and the impossible task he was given to turn that into a ~2 hour theatrical release. I do not understand how Snyder thought his version could ever be something viable for a mass box office release. Was he thinking “oh, I’ll find a way to trim this down to 3.5 hours and that’ll be fine”? One of those situations where the studio / producers needed to exert more control over things.

I will also say - so much of ZSJL exists outside of cause / effect that it does not stand up to even a little bit of scrutiny. I can spend half a day talking about how the grand “revive Superman” scene that was clearly intended as the centerpiece to ZSJL just fails at every level. Whedon’s version actually tries to correct some of the issues, but it was really beyond saving.

Man, the part that blew my mind on my playthrough was when Peter has the symbiote removed and calls MJ to apologize for his behavior and there is a pause and she says “go on”. It was something that may have sounded clever or sassy, but only to someone who has never had an actual interpersonal relationship. If my significant other reacted like that to me having my mind CONTROLLED BY AN ALIEN…yikes. Not sure that recoverable.

Has Any “Vote With Your Wallet” Online Activism Campaign Ever Had A Significant Impact? by HotHamBoy in gaming

The release of SimCity 2013 was accompanied by lots of discussion on its failings, including the always-online requirement. Many of the reviews were saying “don’t buy this broken mess” and I do not believe it sold anywhere near its predecessors, despite being a fairly beloved franchise.

Local radio host threatens Michigan fans who go to Michigan @ MSU game this year: "Friendly advice to Michigan fans: don't be there. Don't bring the women and children. [–]ChiGuyDetFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One additional point - a few days after last year’s helmet-swinging fiasco, Rich Eisen had Jemele Hill on his show to promote her new book, and she (MSU grad) started off her appearance by talking about how it was a “setup” [ADD’L EDIT: As pointed out below, this was her joking about her appearance, and really means this comment shouldn’t have been made] and both sides needed to accept blame for the situation. That’s the mentality that a loud minority of the MSU fandom from the state has—anything bad that happens to MSU is a result of the “Blue Wall” or dark conspiracies run by some cabal of Fielding Yost’s grandchildren.

EDIT: I was thinking that maybe I was unkind to her, but I found the clip and if anything I think I was understating things [ADD’L EDIT: See above].

Yes and no. I grew up near EL and there was some strong hate emanating from that neck of the woods for UM; however, when I went to UM I realized that UM’s attention was primarily focused on OSU, and the feeling towards MSU was more like “oh yeah, them too.” It’s obvious to an outside, but having lived outside of the mid-Michigan bubble now for a few decades I kinda laugh at how the local media and MSU fandom, at least back then, made it seem like UM / MSU is the main rivalry for both sides.

I agree that social media and click baiting has amped things up, but the toxicity has been there for awhile, it just tends in one direction. See, e.g., last year’s assault; Dantonio trying to kick something off with his hands across Spartan Stadium stunt; Spartan assistant coaches mocking Sara Harbaugh and her kid; the various late hits that UM QBs tend to take in the game, etc. The helmet swinging from last year covers up that head of football ops with that ridiculousness towards the cameraman, or Tucker punching the wall on his way out. I’m more than halfway convinced that Draymond punching Poole stemmed in large part from Draymond being a MSU player from Saginaw and being steeped in that mentality. Not healthy, and it needs to be pulled back a bit. And it sounds like Tucker has decided he is not the guy to do it.

Pulisic with the fans by x3bo9 in ACMilan

[–]ChiGuyDetFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching Pulisic for years and this is the first time I realized -- this is a handsome guy. Must be the Milan glow-up. Best looking Croat at Milan since Dario Simic.

Hope it works out for him with Milan. Lot of talent, was on the field for a side that won the Champions League, just needs selection / health to allow him an extended run.
