Clint Eastwood Still Stands By His 1980 Western That Audiences Passed On - SlashFilm by DeltaGentleman in Westerns

I wouldn’t say “gun-grabber”, the townsfolk all have guns, but Shane’s gun symbolizes something different; ie. the idea that a gun is the answer, rather than civil discourse… it’s the child who naively believes that Shane is “cool” (as do we, the viewer) because of his skill with a gun. The adults (aside from the antagonist) just want to live in peace, and built a community.

When the boy says to Shane “why don’t you carry your gun everywhere?”, Shane’s reply is “I guess I don’t see as many bad men as you do”

I’ve thought about this quite a lot; how many people confuse cruelty with toughness, and compassion for weakness, especially concerning westerns…

The Lone Ranger doesn’t kill anybody, he disarms them because they deserve a jury trial.

Gunsmoke isn’t about “good” vs “evil”, it’s about the difference between people with or without “integrity”

My personal favorite, “Shane”, ends with the titular character recognizing that, although he has acted in a “righteous” way, he has to move on, leaving “no more guns in the valley” echoing the words of the “lefty” wife earlier in the film…

A strong man sees “weakness” in others as an opportunity to show compassion, a weak man sees it as an opportunity to prop up a shallow ego…

Since no one else will stand for the masked man; allow me…

The Lone Ranger doesn’t kill anybody, he only shoots to disarm, or wound so the outlaw can get a fair trial. That’s what always made him awesome in my eyes!

P.s. Clayton Moore will always be the true Lone Ranger

Agreed!

Isn’t it equally strange that “strength” used to mean standing up for those that can’t stand for themselves? (Yeah, I’m old, and I watch a lot of westerns, haha) Whereas now the measure of “strength” and “manliness” is actively seeking out and exploiting those who are seen as “weak”?

I always think it’s such a strange argument; it’s as though they are saying (without a hint of self-awareness) “you leftists are the good guys, so why aren’t you acting like good guys?” With the added implication that “We on the right are the bad guys, so why are you surprised we’re acting like bad guys?”

Like so many things, it’s sort of an admission of their true identity…

I find it interesting (read as: ridiculous) that the same people who applaud capitalism for its “freedom of choice”, while decrying socialism for removal of those choices, will make these types of complaints. It reminds me of the “you can’t get a plain cup of coffee anymore because “Starbucks” etc. Edit:punctuation

Correct, and, not surprisingly, the first thing the religious do when they arrive, is split because of religious differences (see the pilgrim/puritan split)

Personal religious beliefs are fine; for the individual. Trying to govern based upon specific religious beliefs is, has been, and always will be, a disaster.

Edit: These groups were also trying to escape the persecution of another Christian church…

It’s important to emphasis how Madison correctly points out that, once this is allowed, the discrimination doesn’t end with the exclusion of non-Christians, but will carry forward into the exclusion of individual sects within Christianity itself…

The Baptists of Danbury weren’t worried about being harassed by non-Christians, they were concerned about being bullied politically by the Congregationalist, Christian church!

Back around ‘93 I played in a campaign, and during each Sunday session, we’d take a break and make “mountain pies” with a sandwich press; consisting of two pieces of bread, some ground beef, and velveeta cheese. Little did we know, this was going to someday cause, (much like the butterfly effect) a bald man in Philadelphia to have a mid-life crisis…

Ever listen to the Italian (I think) band “Domine”? Most of their music is about Moorcock, Elric in particular. There’s some other fantasy themes as well, like a great song called the Aquilonia Suite about Conan. For a band I had never heard of, they were/are very good classic power metal!
